As the leaks suggested, the new flagship smartphones from Huawei have indeed been announced. Specifically, it’s two models: Huawei P50 and Huawei P50 Pro. Huawei P50 Pro+ is not coming this year.

Top-notch displays

Huawei P50 comes with a flat 6.5-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2,700 x 1,225 pixels and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. HDR support is included as well. The Pro model gets a slightly larger 6.6-inch OLED panel, curved at the edges. It has a higher refresh rate of 120 Hz and the same resolution. You’ll also enjoy a 300 Hz touch sampling rate.

Snapdragon or Kirin?

The Huawei P50 Pro will be produced in two versions. The first gets the Kirin 9000 chipset, and there will also be a version with a Snapdragon 888. The base Huawei P50 model will be available only with the Snapdragon 888. What’s interesting is that both Kirin and Snapdragon will support only 4G connectivity, even though both chipsets can also handle 5G.

Huawei P50 comes with 8 GB RAM as standard and either 128 or 256 GB of storage. The Pro version has 8 or 12 GB of RAM, and storage options of 128, 256, and 512 GB. Both models also include a slot for a micro SD card.

In these models, Huawei has officially moved away from Android and installed its own system, HarmonyOS 2.0. These are the company’s first smartphones that will hit the market with this new operating system — and with which it aims to compete with Android and iOS.

Improved cameras

The back design was revealed a few weeks ago. Huawei decided to experiment and bring an unprecedented design. There are two circular modules here that house the lenses themselves. The manufacturer also integrated an LED flash elegantly into them.

The cameras were developed together with Leica. The main camera is the same in both models and consists of a 50-megapixel lens with an aperture of f/1.8. Optical image stabilization is included. Huawei P50 Pro also has a 40-megapixel black-and-white camera and a 13-megapixel ultra-wide lens. Laser autofocus also helps the cameras.

A new periscope lens is used for zooming, with a resolution of 64 MPx, and it also comes with optical stabilization. The base Huawei P50 also has a periscope lens, but with a lower 12-megapixel resolution. The trio is completed by a 13-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, which is a bit narrower than in the Pro variant.

Huawei has dropped the 3D scanning sensor used for more secure face unlocking. You’ll only find a small cut-out with a hidden selfie camera offering 13 MPx resolution.

The Pro version comes with XD Fusion Pro, which doubles the amount of captured light and increases the dynamic range of photos by up to 28%. Both smartphones can record 4K videos, while 8K video recording is missing.

Connectivity and battery capacity

Both models will come with stereo speakers and are water-resistant according to the IP68 certification. The standard Huawei P50 features a battery with a capacity of 4,100 mAh, while the Pro model got a larger 4,360 mAh battery. Both support fast wired charging up to 66 W and wireless charging up to 50 W. Reverse wireless charging will also be available.

Price and availability

All models will also be available on the global market, but availability dates have not been announced. In China, the first units will reach customers on August 12. Huawei P50 Pro with Snapdragon 888 in the 8 + 128 configuration will cost 6,000 yuan, which is €780.

The most expensive model with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage will be available starting in September in two color options. The price will go up to 8,400 yuan (€1,094). Huawei P50 will also arrive in September with a base price of 4,500 yuan (€590).

Huawei P50 Pro will be available in five color variants overall, and the standard Huawei P50 in three. Accessories are covered too, including protective cases. Huawei uses a circular camera design here, and one case will have a removable stand at the back, while the other will feature a flip-out LED light.
