Quick summary

  • 1.46″ AMOLED display with up to 3000 nits brightness.
  • New FatMax mode for targeted fat burning.
  • Body just 8.9 mm thin, battery life up to 7 days.
  • Price in China from 1599 yuan (~€205).

Oppo introduced, along with its new Find X10 phones, a pair of smartwatches. The main novelty is Oppo Watch S2. They’ve gone for a thinner build, a brighter display, and especially new health features led by a mode for burning fat. Until now, we only had leaked information, but now they’re official.

Slim body and a display with brightness of 3000 nits

Watch S2 comes with a 1.46-inch AMOLED display and a stainless-steel case. OPPO designed them to be slim: with no rear sensor bump, they’re only 8.9 mm thick, and the body weighs 34.5 grams. They’re available in three colors: Dynamic Orange, Mist Pink, and Mountain Shadow Gray.

The display’s typical brightness is 600 nits, but in specific outdoor sports modes it can jump up to 3000 nits to stay readable even in direct sunlight. The package includes a segment fluoroelastomer strap that, according to the manufacturer, is thinner and more breathable than in previous models.

FatMax mode and health sensors

The biggest new feature is the FatMax function. Instead of standard heart-rate zones, the watch calculates your personal target heart-rate frequency for fat burning based on your height, weight, resting heart rate, and VO2 max value. During workouts, it alerts you in real time to stay in the right range and also estimates the amount of fat and carbs burned in grams.

The sensor suite at the bottom has also been improved. You’ll find an eight-channel optical heart-rate sensor, a 16-channel blood oxygenation sensor, an EKG electrode, and a temperature sensor. In 60 seconds, they can start a health check that records 13 different indicators at once. Sleep tracking is included, along with sleep apnea screening and all-day SpO2 monitoring. The watches offer more than 100 sports modes and a dual-frequency GPS for accurate route tracking.

System, battery life, and durability

Watch S2 run on ColorOS Watch 17 with the Fluid Cloud feature for live updates, for example on public transport or with food delivery. They can connect to two phones at the same time and receive alerts from both. NFC is supported for transit cards, along with gesture controls.

The manufacturer rates battery life at 7 days with typical use, or up to 10 days in power-saving mode; with the always-on display, it drops to about four days. The watches are water-resistant at 5 ATM and have IP69 and IP69K ratings for dust and water. Web Gizmochina published the full specs on the day of the launch.

Oppo also added a new Titanium Moon color for the older Watch X3. Watch S2 will start selling in China on September 24 for 1599 yuan, which is roughly €205. Oppo priced the Watch X3 Titanium Moon version at 2799 yuan.

For us, the catch is availability for now. Oppo launched the watches only for the Chinese market, and a global debut hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. If Watch S2 do reach us, the price will likely be higher than in China due to customs duty and distribution. Until that happens, thin fitness watches with a similar focus are represented here by models from brands like Amazfit or Huawei.
