The Asus ROG Phone 5 series shows what a gaming phone should look like
The latest generation of smartphones ROG Phone 5, among other features, immediately catches your eye with its improved design. By the way, we didn't see a thing at all for the previous model, the Asus ROG Phone 3, in the line marked with “4”.
The new lineup in its category is set to make a big impression. As we already hinted at in the beginning of the article, the series comes in three different variants. You can look forward to the Asus ROG Phone 5, ROG Phone 5 Pro, and ROG Phone 5 Ultimate.
Individual phones look almost identical, except for different color variations and the presence of a secondary display. The classic Asus ROG Phone 5 is distinguished by a beautiful, backlit RGB logo of the brand ROG. The “Pro” version has a POMLED display instead of colored LEDs on its back, called “ROG Vision”.
The ROG Phone 5 Ultimate smartphone can boast something similar, but only in a black-and-white design. Luckily, you can change the lighting method on any of these three devices. The celebration also brings back the 3.5 mm audio jack for wired headphones.
An excellent display from South Korean tech giant Samsung
A Super AMOLED display with a 6.78-inch diagonal, will delight its users with Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2448 pixels) from Samsung. You’ll surely love the high refresh rate of 144 Hz, low touch response (24.3 milliseconds), a 300 Hz sampling rate, and a built-in fingerprint scanner.
This panel has an aspect ratio of 20.4:9, a density of 395 pixels per inch, a maximum brightness of 800 nits, and excellent color accuracy. On top of that, it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. Glass from the same company also covers the back, and it is the older Gorilla Glass 3 type.
There’s no shortage of top-notch performance. Thanks to the Snapdragon 888
You surely know that a proper gaming phone also needs powerful internals. That’s why we want to assure you that performance won’t be an issue. This is ensured by the top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, combined with LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 internal storage.
The standard and “Pro” versions come with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, while the one labeled “Ultimate” impresses with an incredible 18 GB of RAM. We’re sure you won’t even come close to using that much RAM, but when it comes to gaming, the specs on paper are the real draw.
As for connectivity on these new models, you get support for 5G, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and dual-band GNSS (GPS, Glonass, Galileo, BeiDou, QZSS, NavIC). On the port side, we should highlight the already mentioned 3.5 mm audio jack and a pair of USB-C connectors. Gaming smartphones can also be good cameras.
The Asus ROG Phone 5 lineup offers a primary Sony IMX686 sensor with 64 MP resolution. It is joined by a 13 MP ultra-wide unit, along with a 5 MP macro sensor. Up front, there is a 24 MP “selfie” camera. The lineup can also surprise with various other sensors, such as a grip detection sensor and additional ultrasonic sensors designed for AirTrigger 5.
You’ll also find a Pixelworks i6 processor, stereo speakers to improve gaming and music enjoyment, and various other gaming features. The operating system is Android 11, together with the ZenUI, or ROG UI, user interface. The “Pro” and “Ultimate” models also have additional touch sensors on their backs.
Interestingly, these new models boast a pair of integrated batteries. Each one has 3000 mAh, so you can count on a total capacity of 6000 mAh. That’s also why the smartphones weigh a solid 238 grams.
You’ll also get a 65 W charger in the box, supporting the Qualcomm Quick Charge 5.0 standard. However, there are also reports that in some parts of the world Asus will ship an “only” 30 W charging adapter.
