ColorOS 17 is officially unveiled: Boosts apps by 25 %, an AI photo editor, and a new design inspired by iOS

At its developer conference in China, Oppo officially unveiled ColorOS 17, the new Android-based custom skin for Oppo, OnePlus, and Realme phones. Alongside visual changes, it brings performance improvements, expanded AI features, and also published a schedule for when it will roll out to each of its older models.

New design: Matte glass, floating navigation, and livelier animations

You’ll see the biggest change in ColorOS 17 at first glance—in the look. Oppo has moved to a matte glass style. You’ll find translucent layers in the control center, music player, Notes, and the file manager, and each is blurred differently in strength so the interface feels more spatial. Selected cards and elements are outlined with subtle three-dimensional light framing, which Oppo calls Contour Glow.

The bottom bar in system apps is no longer fixed to the edge. It’s been replaced by a transparent floating capsule-shaped navigation that hovers above the content and also shows background activity. New animations react to touch strength: while dragging, elements stretch; during fast movement, they compress, then return to their original shape. The control center has round toggles and large vertical sliders for brightness and volume; the lock screen, meanwhile, offers three clock styles and a full-screen music player.

Faster app startup and a more stable run of apps in the background

The new Polar Light Engine cuts app launch time by 25% and reduces memory load during operation; it can limit rendering load by up to 30%. The Tidal Engine add-on learns which apps you use most often and when, then allocates system resources accordingly. OPPO provides specific numbers: 55.6% better background app retention, 35% improved launch stability, 50% faster scrolling and loading in the app gallery of third-party apps, and 30% faster launching of mini-programs.

AI photo editor with 6 expert models

ColorOS 17 also includes a new AI Photo Editor that can remove unwanted objects from a photo, reduce motion blur, and adjust colors or the image tone. The editor offers six separate “expert” models focused on light, image quality, composition, colors, portraits, and details. It can also transfer colors, lighting, or skin tones from a reference photo to another one.

Another new feature is the AI Memory Gallery, which automatically assembles a structured “photo blog” with AI-written text from random photos on your phone. It also adds direct connections to third-party camera apps and NAS storage, so you can view your latest shots without them taking up space directly on your phone.

The Xiao Bu AI assistant plans a trip from a single sentence

The Xiao Bu assistant (also known as Breeno) now works through a dedicated Xiao Bu Space, where it tracks your tasks and reminds you, for example, about an upcoming payment or a forgotten reservation. When you travel, just enter one sentence, and Xiao Bu will generate a detailed visual itinerary split into tasks, transportation, accommodation, and notifications — including help with tickets or car rentals.

The new AI Fluid Cloud also combines navigation with active walking reminders for trips by foot, buses, or the metro. It shows the nearest entrance to the station and exactly where you need to get off.

Linking with the car and enhanced security

The new Car+ feature links your phone directly to your car. When you get in and start the engine, navigation automatically moves from your phone’s display to the vehicle screen. ColorOS 17 also adds AI-based security features: protection against scams across apps, deepfake face-swap detection, and protection against fraudulent phone calls.

When will ColorOS 17 come to your phone

First to get ColorOS 17 straight after the launch will be the Oppo Find X10 series, OnePlus 16, and the Oppo Watch S2 watch. For older Oppo models, the update is planned to roll out gradually from October 8 to December 2026. Among the first will be the Find X9 and Find X8 series (October), followed later by the Find N, Reno lines, and tablets. OnePlus will receive the update on a similar schedule: models 15 and 13 in October, and older 12 and 11 in November and December. Realme has scheduled ColorOS 17 for GT8 Pro and GT7 Pro starting on October 8 and October 16 respectively; additional GT and Neo models will follow through the end of the year.

Oppo hasn’t announced when ColorOS 17 will roll out outside of China yet. No specific date has been mentioned so far for a global release, including Europe.
