Corning introduces the new Gorilla Glass Victus with drop protection from 2 m and improved scratch protection

The Corning company introduces a new protective glass, Gorilla Glass Victus. This should provide drop resistance of up to two meters. Among the new improvements, up to twice the scratch protection should not be missing either.

Protective glass

The design of our smartphones has undergone several functional changes. A few years ago, plastic was still the standard material for the back covers of devices. It was replaced by metal, which became popular especially in the premium flagship segment. However, after a short time, it was replaced by glass—specifically tempered glass—which is still with us today.

The vast majority of today’s flagship smartphones, as well as mid-range and upper mid-range models, come with tempered protective glass on both the front and the back. That’s exactly why it’s important for such glass to be durable—and this is where Corning’s Gorilla Glass is the champion.

Gorilla Glass is a very popular choice for smartphone manufacturers, both for displays and for back covers. Corning officially unveiled several different versions of its tough Gorilla Glass, each with its own unique advantages and disadvantages. The latest version is called Gorilla Glass 6, and has been used since the end of 2018.

Gorilla Glass Victus

Now Corning is introducing a new version named Gorilla Glass Victus, which—according to the manufacturer—should double scratch resistance (GG6) and also includes drop protection from a height of two meters.

Before we get to the Victus glass itself, let’s take a look at the upcoming Gorilla Glass 7 generation. New leaks of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 20 smartphone show the use of the new Gorilla Glass 7.

Victus should be the successor to the current Gorilla Glass 6 generation. However, it is not yet known whether the naming will include a numeral 7.

The manufacturer is likely confident that the progress of the new Victus glass is significant, so it may choose a completely new model naming. So where do the improvements come in? In terms of the Corning hardness scale, resistance has stagnated for several years. That’s exactly what Corning is trying to change with its new Gorilla Glass Victus protective glass.

Improvement against scratches and drops

The new protective glass should handle scratching at a level of 7 – 10 Newtons. This unknown unit may not tell you much, but the previous generation and competitors are important—those only manage scratching at 2 – 4 Newtons. So there’s a truly noticeable, double increase in the value in question.

In terms of drop protection, the previous Gorilla Glass 6 generation can survive repeated drops from a height of 1,6 meters. The new Gorilla Glass Victus glass should handle multiple drops from a height of two meters. That’s not a huge improvement, but in some situations it can be genuinely helpful.
