A “wagon” is a body style that practically nobody in China makes; local customers want an SUV or a sedan. BYD has decided to change that, and its brand Fang Cheng Bao is now delivering the Formula S GT—an electric wagon just over five meters long—with a LiDAR on the roof and charging that takes less time than a lunch break. According to the CarNewsChina portal, the first units appeared at dealers even before sales officially start in September.

The first sedan lineup from a brand that until recently only made off-road vehicles

Fang Cheng Bao is one of the brands within the BYD group, and until now it has relied on two lineups: Bao for off-road and Tai for the city. Formula S is its very first personal-car lineup, and it comes in as many as three body versions: the sedan Formula S, the shooting brake Formula S GT, and the coupe Formula SL. Pre-orders are currently open for the first two, with a price range of 230,000 to 280,000 yuan, or roughly $34,000 to $41,700.

How well the brand is doing is also shown by sales figures. In July 2026, Fang Cheng Bao delivered 41,213 vehicles, which is up 190.6% year-on-year, and for the first seven months of the year it was 200,687 units. Cumulatively, it crossed the half-million mark in less than three years since it was founded—at a time when BYD’s parent brand’s sales in China are falling.

A five-meter length, LiDAR on the roof, and a towing device

The Formula S GT measures 5025 mm in length, 1967 mm in width, and 1483 mm in height, and with an optional towing hitch it grows to 5095 mm. A 2960 mm wheelbase places it in the upper mid-class, and unlike most Chinese electric cars, it can tow a trailer up to 500 kg—exactly what customers expect from a wagon.

Design-wise, the car borrows the sporty language of Denza Z: trapezoidal LED headlights, a slanted hood, semi-embedded door handles, multi-spoke wheels, and diamond-pattern taillights. A LiDAR sits on the roof, along with roof rails and a small ducktail spoiler. The interior is dominated by a large floating display paired with a smaller LCD instrument cluster, a three-spoke steering wheel, and a paddle shifter behind the wheel. The nice touch is that the center tunnel still keeps a block of physical buttons next to the wireless charging pad.

92 kWh, 490 kW, and charging in nine minutes

In standard spec, the Formula S GT gets a 92.093 kWh LFP battery built on the second-generation Blade cells. The rear-wheel-drive version has a 300 kW motor and a range of 800 to 850 kilometers; the all-wheel-drive variant with a combined output of 490 kW covers 730 kilometers on a single charge. But note that these are figures based on the Chinese CLTC cycle, which is significantly more optimistic than Europe’s WLTP. Real-world numbers will be noticeably lower.

The strongest argument, however, is charging. The car supports Flash Charging, with which the battery can be topped up from 10 to 97% in just nine minutes. If such speed holds up in everyday driving, then range stops being a concern on long trips. On the board, you’ll find the DiPilot 300 driver-assistance system, internally nicknamed „God’s Eye B”, which handles both navigated city driving and highway driving, plus a chassis with magnetorheological dampers DiSus-M.

Probably under a different name in Europe

The Fang Cheng Bao brand doesn’t exist outside China yet, so if the Formula S GT makes it to foreign markets, it will very likely do so under the Denza banner. The design supports that idea too: the car is based on the Denza Z model, which debuted in the UK at the Goodwood festival. For Europe, that would be an interesting offer—electric wagons are as rare here as hen’s teeth, and most of the existing ones cost considerably more.
