Recently, we told you that Huawei is preparing its brand-new first desktop—a desktop computer. Now, more news is coming in the form of testing this device’s capabilities in video rendering and 4K content playback.
On the Chinese social network BiliBili, a video has appeared where they talk about testing the Huawei desktop for video processing and playing back more demanding 4K content. It will include the mainboard Kunpeng 920.
It will come with the Kunpeng motherboard 920
The Huawei desktop will apparently include a custom-made motherboard, and it’s specifically the Kunpeng 920. It was introduced at a conference last September. Of course, it’s compatible with standard RAM, storage, network cards, and other hardware.
In early leaks, it was said that the desktop will support six-core and eight-core processors with the ARM architecture and RAM DDR4-2400 memory up to 64 GB. There were also SATA 3.0, PCIe 3.0, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and gigabit Ethernet ports. For the Chinese giant, it shouldn’t be a problem to build a Windows 10 machine with ARM architecture based on the Kirin or Kunpeng platform.
However, according to the latest information about the motherboard, we can say for sure that there will be their own integrated chip, the Huawei Kunpeng 920 2249K. It will also have 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 256GB SSD drive.
Huawei’s motherboard also features 4 RAM expansion slots for up to 64GB, as well as a slot for a graphics card, the PCIe 4.0. Yeston RX 550 graphics will likely be paired here along with the UOS system.
Performance testing
In the Blender BWM test, it took 11 minutes and 47 seconds to complete the tasks. During 4K video streaming, everything ran smoothly, but lag appeared when playing back a 4K video from local storage.
There was also a comment from a user named “Kunpeng developer”, who claims that the tested unit only has a lighter version of the processor, because it has slightly higher performance. We also learned that the Kunpeng 920 2249K processor is meant for servers and is therefore not a typical consumer component.
However, it’s also interesting to see the Huawei desktop device in the 3DMark database. Here, it shows up with the AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4400G processor. Different sources provide different information, which is common in China. We’ll have to wait for official statements from Huawei in the coming days.
What will the price be?
So far, Chinese sources have revealed a price tag of 7000 yuan, which is roughly €945 / $1061 USD. So it won’t be the cheapest device, but it should handle gaming as well as demanding graphics tasks.
