- Jaecoo J5 EV in Jakarta arrived missing the right front wheel
- Manufacturer: the cause was a collision with a curb
- The manufacturer found no manufacturing defect; an independent finding is missing
- Chery is also handling Omoda 5 in Malaysia at the same time
Jaecoo J5 EV, Indonesia’s best-selling pure electric car, arrived 4. November in central Jakarta without the right front wheel. According to the manufacturer’s technical inspection, parts fell off after the car hit a curb and a road barrier, not because of a manufacturing defect.
According to the website CarNewsChina, the accident happened at around 8:20 local time on Jalan KH Mas Mansyur, and footage from passing drivers shows a black SUV stopped by a concrete curb. On the roadway, suspension components and part of the bumper could be seen, and a section of the barrier near the road was also damaged.

First it was reported about the rear wheel

Initial Indonesian reports described the detached wheel as the right rear, but Jaecoo fixed it and confirmed it was the front right corner of the car. After speaking with the owner, the brand’s technical team inspected the vehicle and concluded that the SUV first struck the curb and barrier, and the wheel separated as a result of the collision — not as its cause.

The inspection found damage to the front right bumper, fender, and front right doors, and according to Jaecoo it found no indication that the accident was caused by a product defect. The service is discussing the repair and spare parts with the owner. No independent investigation has been reported so far, so the conclusions are based only on the manufacturer’s statement.
Link to Omoda 5
Footage from Jakarta was immediately compared on Indonesian social media with cases from Malaysia, where issues with Omoda 5—another Chery group model—are being handled. Malaysia’s Road Transport Department JPJ 11. October temporarily suspended the type approval of Omoda 5 and postponed new registrations, while Chery said it would recall C and H variants, which affects 8 878 vehicles.

The recall followed after the rear axle of Omoda 5 came off in Malaysia, and Chery boss Yin Tongyue personally apologized to Malaysia’s minister of investment, trade and industry on 21. October. Omoda 5 already had a similar campaign in May 2024, when Chery recalled 600 vehicles for inspection. Later it identified 60 vehicles with faulty axle components from a batch manufactured on 15. August 2023 and attributed the problem to an incorrectly set welding electrode.
Connection not confirmed; sales figures are high
The Malaysian cases involved the rear axle of Omoda 5, while Jaecoo attributes the Jakarta incident to a collision with infrastructure along the road, and nothing currently suggests they’re related. The situation is sensitive for the brand too, because according to Gaikindo association data, from January to September 2026, Indonesia sold 26 635 units of Jaecoo J5 EV wholesale, making it the country’s best-selling electric car.
Jaecoo belongs to the Chery group, which in recent weeks has had to defend the quality of chassis parts. If independent findings emerge from Jakarta, we’ll update you.
