Smart thermostatic heads are nothing new on our site. We have even already tested some, but so far they were only heads from Moes. This time we had the chance to try the Blitzwolf BW-TRV16 thermostatic heads.
In the review, we’ll look at their quality, installation method, and mainly focus on functionality and reliability compared to the Moes heads, which we still use today and are very happy with.

Packaging quality and package contents
After unpacking, it’s immediately clear that the Blitzwolf BW-TRV16 focuses more on practicality than on a premium feel. The packaging is handled by a classic cardboard box with product print and basic information. Nothing fancy, but the box feels sturdy and protects the head reliably during shipping. Inside, everything is neatly arranged so the individual parts don’t damage each other.
Inside the package you’ll find the thermostatic head itself, a set of adapters for different types of radiator valves, and a brief user manual. The adapters are an important part, because they make it possible to use the head on most radiators without having to buy extra accessories.
Design and build quality
At first glance, this is a typical smart thermostatic head that tries to stay unobtrusive and fit into any interior. The body is made of white plastic with a matte finish that doesn’t distract and fingerprints aren’t very visible on it either. The shape is cylindrical and the dimensions are chosen so the head doesn’t look too bulky on the radiator.
We personally like this minimalist design. After all, the head on the radiator isn’t meant to attract attention; on the contrary, it should stay discreet.
The front part is equipped with a small display that shows the current set temperature and the device status. The display is clearly readable even from a greater distance. However, it’s not a classic display, but one placed under the plastic cover of the head, through which the individual symbols on the display are backlit onto the thin plastic surface.
Structurally, the head consists of the main body with the motor, a fastening nut, and two covers. Under the larger cover there is space for three AA batteries, which are not included in the package. The upper, smaller cover surrounds the only button on the head.
Plastic parts fit together surprisingly precisely, and nothing rattles or feels loose anywhere. Overall, the workmanship quality is very good.
Installation and first startup
One of the biggest advantages of the Blitzwolf BW-TRV16 is its easy installation, which even users without technical skills can handle. First, you need to remove the original mechanical head from the radiator. Then, choose the right adapter from the package based on the valve type and mount it onto the radiator. The smart head is then simply screwed onto the adapter and tightened by hand.
Personally, we didn’t need any adapter because we have a standard valve thread size. In this case, you just screw the head on instead of the manual head.
After mounting comes the first power-on. Once you insert the batteries, the head turns on automatically, and the motor performs a short calibration movement. This process takes only a few seconds and is meant to adapt to the specific valve. After that, the head is ready to pair with the app. This step is very important because during it the head tests the valve movement and sets its end stops for fully opening and fully closing.
We did run into an issue with one radiator. The head couldn’t push the valve far enough, so even though the valve was supposed to be completely closed, in reality it wasn’t—and the radiator heated anyway, even though the head believed the valve was closed.
Pairing works through the Smart Life or Tuya Smart app. First, we need to get into OFF mode—this is done by turning the top part of the head, which also adjusts the temperature, all the way down to the lowest adjustable temperature. Then just hold the top button for 3 seconds. On the display, the WiFi symbol will start blinking.
The Smart Life app we use for other devices recognized the head automatically. If that doesn’t happen, you need to find TRV (Thermostat Radiator Valve) in the list of devices.
The next step is already simple and quick. Just follow the on-screen instructions on your smartphone.
App and control options
The SmartLife app is well known to everyone who uses Chinese smart devices based on the Tuya platform. The app interface is clear and intuitive. Once you open the head in the app, it shows the current temperature, the set target value, and the basic control elements.
Changing the temperature takes just a few seconds—simply adjust the value on the display or enter the exact temperature using the + and - buttons. The smallest step is 0.5 °C.
In addition to manual control, the app also offers the ability to create schedules. You can set different temperatures for each day of the week and different times of day, which is ideal for reducing the temperature at night or when nobody is home.
There are schedules that apply to the whole week, or templates 5+2 and 6+1. This way, you can set different temperatures for heating during weekdays and the weekend, or use a separate setting just for Sunday. You set temperatures for specific times throughout the day. The default times are 6:00, 8:00, 11:30, 12:30, 17:00 and 22:00, but you can change them. For each of these times, you can set a different temperature—so, for example, the head can heat at 20 °C at night, 22 °C in the morning, 23°C around noon, and so on.
The app also includes additional functions like a child lock, frost protection, or sharing the device with other household members. Overall, the app feels stable and offers everything you’d expect from a modern smart thermostatic head.
Battery life and real-world performance
In everyday use, the Blitzwolf BW-TRV16 generally works reliably, but it needs fine-tuning. Temperature calibration is available, meaning that if the head measures the temperature inaccurately, you can adjust it. This is done using a temperature correction that you can set with precision of 0.1 °C.
At first, though, we had an issue setting the temperature. The head measured correctly when the valve was off, but the moment the radiator started heating, the temperature increased and the head displayed about 2 °C more than the actual temperature in the room. The problem is that the head itself measures the temperature right on the radiator. It’s a shame you can’t connect an external thermometer that would feed the head with a more accurate temperature reading.
In the end, we adjusted to the problem, and set the room temperature so that the difference was taken into account. So if we wanted 23 °C in the room, we set the target temperature to 21 – 22 °C. When you buy it, you’ll have to accept that and factor in some time during which you need to monitor the head’s operation so you can fine-tune the settings to your needs.
The head’s movements are smooth and the noise level is acceptable — in a quiet environment you can hear it, but it’s nothing terrible. At night, during sleep, we didn’t wake up to the sound of the head. Of course, you can only hear the motor when it changes the valve position.
As for battery life, with normal use and reasonable scheduling settings, the head should work for several months without needing to replace the batteries. Power consumption is optimized, and the head only activates when it’s actually needed. The app also notifies you in time when the battery capacity is low, so there’s no risk of it unexpectedly turning off during the heating season. We’ve only tested the head for a few weeks so far, so we can’t yet confirm the real battery life.
There’s also an open-window detection function, where the head should close the valve if the temperature suddenly drops by 3 degrees. If it detects such a situation, the app will also send a push notification. Unfortunately, it didn’t work very reliably.
Blitzwolf BW-TRV16: Final verdict
Blitzwolf BW-TRV16 is a smart thermostatic head that offers a great price-to-features ratio. It’s ideal for users who want to start with intelligent heating control without complicated installation and without needing to invest in additional devices. Thanks to easy mounting and a clear app, it’s a sensible choice for a modern home.
In this case, though, you need to account for some inaccuracies in room temperature measurement and adjust the settings for correct operation.
