A phone without black bezels: Tecno showed an 0 mm-bezel-free display, and the trick is in the glass

Quick summary

  • Tecno showed at the trade fair IFA 2026 in Berlin a phone concept with a 0 mm frame around the display.
  • The trick isn’t in the panel, but in the dual-layer cover glass. The lower layer bends over the frame and optically covers the inactive portion of the display.
  • The display module is inserted from the back, and the second layer of glass is held with its own heat-melting adhesive.
  • The panel is a 6.78″ AMOLED with 1.5K resolution and 144 Hz.
  • The catch: the metal frame is wider than on typical phones, and it wasn’t possible to fully hide the black strip at the bottom edge.

Bezels around the display have shrunk to fractions of a millimeter over the last few years, but they won’t disappear completely. The reason is physical: every panel has an inactive area around its perimeter where the connections run. At the Berlin trade show IFA 2026, Tecno showed a concept that dealt with it in an unconventional way: it didn’t remove the black border, it just hid it under the glass.

A bezel of 0 mm that isn’t an optical illusion of the display

As you can try on the spot the portal GSMArena, this is a functional prototype with a 6.78-inch AMOLED display, 1.5K resolution, and a 144 Hz refresh rate. When you look from the front, the image really runs edge-to-edge.

A comparison will help you imagine the difference: iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is among the best on the market today, has bezels around 1,36 mm. Tecno’s concept is zero on paper. And in hand, according to reviewers, it really looks different from anything you can buy today.

How it works: two layers of glass instead of a thinner panel

The solution isn’t in the display, but above it. The phone has dual-layer cover glass. The top layer is a standard protective plate, while the bottom layer bends downward and overlaps the metal frame. The inactive part of the panel and the black border will then stay optically hidden under the bent glass, which optically stretches the image all the way to the edge.

Because of this, production had to change too. The display module is inserted into the phone from the back, not from the front like usual, and the second layer of glass is fixed with its own heat-meltable adhesive. These are exactly the kinds of details that determine whether the concept can be manufactured in millions of units, or whether it stays a trade-show exhibit.

Where’s the catch

It’s not perfect, and Tecno doesn’t deny that either. First: the metal frame is significantly wider than on regular phones. The glass has to bend over it, so what you gain in the front you lose on the sides. Second: according to hands-on impressions, dark strips remain visible along the bottom edge of the display, so for now it doesn’t work completely all the way around.

With this concept, everything is completely fine—exactly what it’s for. Tecno isn’t showing a product for sale here, but a manufacturing process that could appear in regular phones in a year or two. And it’s interesting for another reason too: every manufacturer—including Apple—has to fight the same problem.

What does this mean for us

Tecno isn’t one of the best-known brands here. It belongs to the Chinese Transsion group, which is huge especially in Africa and Southeast Asia. That’s exactly why it’s interesting that it came up with something like this, not some of the big players.

For you as a buyer, what matters is something else: if double-layer glass turns out to be manufacturable, it will first show up in flagship phones and only later in regular models. So for now, think of it as a preview of where things are headed—not something you’ll be able to order in just a few months.
