- In the EU 1.89 million new electric vehicles in 2025
- A record share of 17.3 % of new cars
- Slovakia with 4.7 %, the second-worst in the EU
- Most in Denmark, 67.8 %
Europeans bought more electric cars last year than ever before. According to data from Eurostat, in the EU in 2025 there were 1.89 million new electric cars registered, which is 29.7% more than a year earlier. However, Slovakia lags behind in the ranking, and only Croatia is worse across the whole union.

Plug-in hybridy naopak rástli ešte rýchlejšie než elektromobily, o 34,2 % na 1,03 milióna.
Dánsko jazdí na elektrinu, Slovensko na chvoste
There are huge differences between countries, and in Denmark, electric cars were as many as two out of three new cars (67.8 %). Next comes the Netherlands with 40.2%, followed by Malta, Finland, and Sweden, all staying just below 40%. At the other end is Croatia with 1.9%, Slovakia with 4.7 %, and Bulgaria with 4.9%. Norway, where electricity accounts for as much as 95% of new cars, is listed separately by Eurostat because it isn’t a member of the union.

Slovakia is an interesting market for Chinese brands, because they’re strongest specifically in electric cars. In our country, for example, BYD is already officially sold, and we wrote about its offer and sales network in the article BYD on Slovakia. Other brands that are already being sold here or are yet to arrive can be found in our overview of Chinese electric car brands in Europe.
