We haven’t seen this kind of combo on a mobile before. Honor Magic9 Super Edition has 11 000 mAh, 8,1 mm and active cooling

Besides the flagship Magic9 Pro Max, Honor also unveiled two cheaper models in Beijing that are already on sale in China. Honor Magic9 is a compact phone with a 6.37″ display, dual 200 MP cameras, and an 8 000 mAh battery. Magic9 Super Edition is larger and, in addition to an 11 000 mAh battery, it also has a fan inside.

Honor Magic9: A small phone with a 8 000 mAh battery

The base Honor Magic9 has shrunk compared to its predecessor, since the OLED display is now 6.37″ instead of 6.58″ on Magic8. The battery, however, has grown by 1,000 mAh to 8,000 mAh, and you can charge it with a 80 W wired charger or wirelessly at 50 W. With a cable, it can also charge other devices with 27 W. The phone is 8.5 mm thick and weighs 209 grams.

The display has a resolution of 1 236 × 2 664 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz; however, this more energy-efficient LTPO panel it is not. Across the whole area it reaches a brightness of 2 000 nits, and its PWM dimming frequency is 3 840 Hz. Honor calls it the first phone with TÜV Rheinland Global Eye Care 6.0 certification for eye protection.

Magic9 is sold in yellow, white, black and mint green, and its body has IP68, IP69, and IP69K resistance.

Two 200 Mpx cameras even in the smaller Magic9

On the camera module, Honor didn’t compromise on the smaller model. The main sensor is 200 Mpx, size 1/1.4″, with an f/1.9 aperture, while the second 200 Mpx sensor belongs to the periscope telephoto with an 85 mm focal length and 3.5x zoom. Both have stabilization rated at CIPA 7.5, while the Pro Max has CIPA 8.0. They’re complemented by a 50 Mpx ultra-wide lens and a front 55 Mpx camera with a square sensor.

From the ARRI lineup, Magic9 got the same as the Pro Max: it records in the LogC3 curve, offers 87 ARRI Looks film profiles, and a Movie Live mode in 2.39:1 format. The image is processed by Honor’s own H1 chip, and you can also purchase a smaller teleconverter, the G200, which makes the telephoto lens equivalent to 200 mm.

The difference from the Pro Max is in the chip. Magic9 runs on the last year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, which was already used in Magic8, and it’s paired with 12 or 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB to 1 TB of UFS 4.1 storage. The GSMArena portal GSMArena also noticed the connection with Apple products, so you can pair the phone with Apple Watch and, when your iPhone rings, Magic9 will display it for you.

Magic9 Super Edition: 11 000 mAh and a fan

The larger Magic9 Super Edition has a 6.81″ display with a resolution of 1,280 × 2,788 pixels and a 120 Hz refresh rate. The main attraction, however, is the battery with a capacity of 11,000 mAh, which even the Pro Max doesn’t have, and until now no Magic model had it either. Charging is the same as with Magic9 (80 W wired and 50 W wireless), and despite the big battery the phone is only 8.1 mm thick and weighs 227 grams.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is cooled by a large vapor chamber and an active fan with 30,000 RPM that together cool 12 W, so performance shouldn’t drop even during long loads. According to Gizmochina, it also includes an infrared port and the C3 chip for a better signal.

The Super Edition cameras are about a tier lower

Honor saved on the cameras in the Super Edition. The main sensor still has 200 MP, but it’s smaller—1/1.55″—the telephoto lens has 50 MP with a three-times zoom, and the ultra-wide-angle lens is 12 MP. The front camera has 50 MP and a standard rectangular sensor, and you can record video in 4K at 120 frames per second.

The Super Edition also has the Honor H1 chip and supports the G200 teleconverter; colors are the same as on the Magic9 model, and the fingerprint is read by an optical scanner under the display.

Prices in China

In China, Honor Magic9 starts at 4 999 yuan (about 650 €) for the 12 + 256 GB version, while the highest version (16 GB + 1 TB) costs 6 999 yuan.

Magic9 Super Edition is cheaper and starts at 4 499 yuan, which is about 590 €. It doesn’t have a 1 TB option; the top one has 16 + 512 GB and costs 5 499 yuan.

Honor hasn’t announced a global version for any of them yet, even though the predecessor Magic8 Pro is officially sold in Europe.
