Ouvis AMR5: Design and build of the mini PC

This computer’s compact body measures just 156.1 x 132.6 x 71.8mm. It’s not a typical square mini PC with a monitor mount—on the contrary. This PC has a cube shape, rounded edges, and a unique polycarbonate design, with RGB backlighting on the sides that you can customize.

The top edge shapes the entire computer with a small cylinder that also serves as the power button and a rotary switch for performance modes. Four anti-slip feet on the bottom take care of stability on your desk.

Cooling grid is also included, actively used especially in Performance mode, plus an interesting magnetic right-side panel that lets you see upgrade options for the RAM and SSD storage.

This design also keeps the weight low at just 1.5 kilograms. With such a lightweight computer, you can comfortably carry your portable office setup with you to a so-called “home office”, and use it as a gaming machine on the go as well.

However, it’s important to note that the manufacturer doesn’t include any accessories—you’ll need to use your own. And what’s actually in the box? We’ll take a look in the next chapter.

Package contents

Inside the box, you’ll find the mini computer itself, Ouvis AMR5, wrapped in protective film. You can connect the monitor in three different ways right away, but the package includes a basic HDMI 1.4 cable that supports Full HD resolution.

You’ll also find a mains power adapter with a local connector (EU Plug, 220 – 240 V / 50 – 60 Hz), as well as a brief user manual in English.

Performance: That’s handled by the AMD Ryzen 7 5700U chip.

In the technical specifications, one specific detail immediately caught our eye. It’s an eight-core processor, AMD Ryzen 7 5700U (clocked at 1.8 GHz, with Turbo boosting temporarily up to 4.3 GHz), which we definitely wouldn’t expect in this price category.

This processor is built using a modern 7 nm technology and TSMC’s manufacturing process, and it’s also paired with active cooling and a shared graphics chip, the AMD Radeon Graphics. The chip is a proven choice for gaming laptops from model years 2022 and 2023, but those can’t match the price of the Ouvis mini computer.

We really couldn’t complain about a lack of performance during everyday office work. It can also handle playing 2160p video without any major issues, even with a pair of connected monitors. Where we can find some limitations is in the graphics chip. Some gaming titles cut the level of graphics details a bit too much—that said, we’ll cover that in the relevant chapter.

For the rest of the specs, you can also mention up to 16 GB of RAM, which is DDR4 type. However, inside this computer—under the magnetic right-side panel—there’s also another free DDR4 slot. The maximum value for configuring your own RAM is 64 GB.

The CrystalDiskMark test revealed read and write speeds.

The internal storage is an M.2 SSD with a capacity of 512 GB. Considering the size of gaming titles available on the Game Pass platform right now, this is a rather borderline figure. For example, Forza Horizon 5 will take up 119 GB right away, and after the first startup the user has only 475 GB of space left. In this case, though, there’s also a free M.2 slot, with support for expanding storage up to 4 TB.

Here’s how the benchmark tests turned out

We put the mini computer through several well-known performance benchmark tests right away. Our selection also included trusted sources such as Cinebench and PC Mark. The results confirm the focus of this computer as a workstation as well as a device suitable for lighter gaming use.

You can view all the results in the photos below:

Office work and multimedia content

We first put the PC through a multimedia playback test. It has three performance modes – Silent, Auto, and Performance. And even in the quietest mode, we didn’t notice any issues with playing content in 4K resolution (2160p). Loading movies on streaming platforms like HBO Max or SkyShowtime also went smoothly without major problems.

However, we decided to test this computer also as a workstation—meaning a device that, thanks to its compact dimensions, you can theoretically carry between your home and your office. In this case, we switched to the automatic performance mode (Auto), which included online and offline editing of documents and spreadsheets, as well as creating articles in web environments using the Google Chrome browser. The computer kept up with our pace and didn’t hesitate even when dozens of browser tabs were turned on.

We measured the noise level during use with a mobile app that tracks ambient sound. You can check the approximate results for each performance mode below:

We tested modern gaming titles and it held up

First of all, we need to highlight all three PC performance modes. Naturally, the biggest difference in performance and in how responsive the PC feels came in the top Performance mode, which we also used when testing the gaming titles. So let’s head over to Microsoft Store and take a look at the newest as well as generationally older gaming titles from the Game Pass subscription.

Let’s jump straight to the exclusive “next-gen” gaming titles. On the PC, we installed Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Motorsport (2023). After installation (over 110 GB), both games asked for a driver update or an update related to the graphics chip.

Since these are the newest titles that are genuinely demanding visually, the gaming experience was rather average. After recognizing the PC, the game lowered the graphics settings too much—down to a mid to low level. In both cases, the “FPS” value stayed around 40 – 42.

However, when we swapped these gaming titles for an older-generation game in the same category—i.e. Forza Horizon 4 or Forza Motorsport 7—the gaming experience improved significantly. The increase in “FPS” and the smoother loading of shadows and graphical details were incomparable. The manufacturer also claims there’s enough power for the GTA V gaming title. In this case though, due to the same significant reduction in graphics details, we’d rather choose an older-generation title from this series.

We also tried graphics-lighter gaming titles, such as City Skylines II. It didn’t disappoint us, and the gaming experience was hassle-free. The PC also handled the popular Minecraft Launcher, so you don’t need to hesitate about launching your Minecraft world.

On top of that, the PC can also run online gaming titles that mainly put pressure on RAM when you play via a web browser. If you want to boost its capacity, that option is available here—just like with the fast SSD storage. This is exactly where we’d add extra capacity to the second slot, given the size of today’s gaming titles.

Good connectivity also includes USB-C

As we mentioned earlier, the package doesn’t include any PC peripherals. You’ll need to get a mouse, keyboard, speakers, and also the monitors yourself. The gaming mini PC supports up to 3 connected monitors, with up to 4K resolution (3860 x 2160 pixels). These monitors, however, use different ports—so you can use HDMI, DisplayPort, and also the modern, universal USB-C connector.

On the front, you’ll also find a pair of USB-A ports (USB 3.0), plus a 3,5 mm audio jack for connecting wired headphones or another audio output. In the upper section, there’s also a circular power on/off knob, which also works as a performance mode switch (Silent, Auto, and Performance), complemented by stylish RGB backlighting.

Now let’s move to the back. Besides the video outputs mentioned above, there’s another pair of USB-A ports (USB 3.0). You’ll also find a LAN port (up to 1000 Mbps) for a wired internet connection, as well as a DC port for power input (it has a local plug for the – EU Plug power standard).

Software: Windows 11 Pro

The device price also includes a license for the operating system. Specifically, it’s Windows 11 Pro, which the manufacturer additionally customizes with the part where you normally go through synchronization with your Microsoft account. This means you don’t have to do that step, and thanks to that the first boot is a bit faster. You go straight to creating your first user.

Besides, it’s a standard license with all its pros and cons. There’s also the Microsoft Store, and updating built-in apps, system localization, the app store itself, and even installing game titles—we didn’t have any issues at all. So from the software side, we give the manufacturer a thumbs-up.

Final verdict

The Ouvis AMR5 mini PC offers a truly surprising level of performance for its low price. Besides office work or using it as a multimedia hub at home, it also impresses with a solid graphics chip that delivers a good gaming experience.

Our basic configuration was a bit limited by its storage. So we recommend upgrading your RAM and storage via the available ports, or waiting for a higher configuration of the product.
