Verdict: TESWAY X5
Our editorial rating is based on product testing.
- robust and sturdy frame construction with front and rear suspension
- 750W motor with a maximum speed of 45 km/h (after unlocking)
- an extra passenger seat with pedals, removable and swappable for a basket (optional accessory)
- up to a 25Ah battery delivers very good range on a single charge
- high weight
- awkward folding, since when folded it doesn’t hold its position very well
- weak front light
In the editorial office, we had the chance to test a less traditional e-bike from the new Chinese brand, TESWAY X5. Design-wise, it looks more like a moped, and it even has a passenger seat with a backrest.
In the review, we’ll look at the build quality of this new model. In short, we’ll also cover the TESWAY brand and go through all the bike’s components. We won’t skip our riding experience either.

About the TESWAY brand
Since this is the first product from TESWAY that we’re testing, let’s briefly introduce the brand. It’s a fairly young company, founded in 2016. It falls under TESGO, which we also don’t know much about in our region.
While the TESGO brand sells more premium bikes, TESWAY focuses on manufacturing and selling affordable e-bikes while maintaining good quality.
High-quality packaging
The electric bike TESWAY X5 was delivered to us by courier in a large box with rather unusual dimensions 150 x 90 x 60 cm. The total shipping weight is up to 42 kg, so carrying it is a real hassle. Plus, there are no straps or hand-hold openings on the box.
However, if we look inside, the packaging is exceptionally well made. The bike is placed in the box in a folded position, including the front wheel mounted, while all important parts are protected by foam inserts and secured with cable ties. Additional foam reinforcement blocks also help protect it from damage during transport, ensuring nothing flies around inside the box.
Besides the bike, there’s also accessories that are neatly stored in a separate box. The manufacturer doesn’t include any extra gifts with the bike, but the packaging quality is very good.
Easy installation
Assembling the TESWAY X5 electric bike won’t take you much time, because the bike already has the front wheel, fenders, and lights installed. However, it takes quite a bit of time to fully unpack it and remove all protective and packaging materials.
After that, simply flip the bike over and we can start mounting the remaining parts. We began by attaching the handlebars to the stem, which requires four screws. Next, we placed the seat into position and tightened the quick-release clamp. We continued with the pedals—here we appreciate that the manufacturer marks the direction of the threads.
In this state, the bike is already ready to ride, even though additional parts are still missing—we’ll cover those in the next chapter.
An interesting bonus in the form of a seat and pedals
TESWAY X5 is a very interesting bike especially because of its less traditional design. It features an additional rear passenger seat with a backrest for the second rider, along with foot pedals.
First, you need to attach the rear backrest, and then the seat simply clicks into the pre-drilled holes. We completed the whole installation by securing the foot pedals, which consist of a reinforced metal part and a plastic cover. Each one is held in place by a pair of screws.
The extra seat is quite long and can fit one adult or two kids. For long rides it probably won’t be comfortable enough, but for short trips it’s a nice extra.
You can also add a front or rear cargo rack—or a basket—instead of the seat. What’s even more interesting, and a bit bizarre, is the rear attached trailer. We found it in the product presentation photos, but it isn’t listed among the accessories on the e-shop.
Quality of workmanship
TESWAY X5 has an aluminum alloy frame, and it already looks sturdy at first glance. Visually it looks more like a moped than a bicycle, so it will probably appeal more to those who simply want a comfortable ride without constantly pedaling.
We had this e-bike available in a red color that’s really eye-catching and vivid, but it’s also available in black. The build quality is good, though you can spot minor imperfections in the paintwork. Also, the frame welds aren’t covered—however, that’s common for bikes like this. We like that the cables are routed through the frame, and overall it strongly reminds us of Engwe bikes, since some components are shared too.
Handlebars with a display
The handlebars on the TESWAY X5 bike are 65 cm wide and are bent toward the rider, which we appreciate. From the ground they sit at about 118 cm, with no height adjustment option. We rate this positively, because too many joints and hinges can cause instability and squeaking.
We also need to praise the grips with so-called lock-out collars on both sides, so they can be easily removed and replaced. On the left side, you’ll find a control with buttons for turning the power on/off, controlling the lights and modes, and also the front brake lever.
On the right side, you have the rear brake lever and Shimano shifting. Unfortunately, we have to criticize that the manufacturer went with the cheapest shifting option. Hopefully these cheap and low-quality Shimano shifters will soon disappear from Chinese warehouses and manufacturers will finally stop using them.
In the middle there’s a clear color display, which we already know from Engwe bikes. It shows your current speed along with other riding data such as mileage or average speed. It’s a shame the battery status is represented only by a graphic symbol—we don’t get the current voltage or at least a percentage value.
Throttle control
In the standard setup, there’s no throttle controller mounted on the bike, so it works only with human power—but since it has a higher power rating than 250W, you can’t escape compulsory insurance.
The manufacturer, however, includes a throttle control—so-called half-twist throttle—that you can mount instead of the grip. You simply remove the original grip, slide on the throttle control with the cover, and plug it into the corresponding port. It’s the only free port on the cable, prepared for this purpose.
Throttle control doesn’t need any special activation. It works immediately after installation. The throttle control also has an integrated horn, which would otherwise be missing on the bike without it.
Even though we praised the grips with collars, when using a twist throttle, the collar gets in the way a bit—and it would be more comfortable without it.
Power and riding modes
The TESWAY X5 is equipped with a 750W motor placed in the rear wheel. It helps it reach a maximum speed of 45 km/h. However, from the factory it comes with a limit of 25 km/h, which can be easily increased through the hidden menu called P-settings.
Here’s how: you need to press and hold the + and - buttons at the same time. The top speed setting is hidden under an option labeled P6.
We have 6 modes available. The first one is for classic cycling without electric drive, while the other modes from 1 to 5 are so-called assisted modes, meaning they use help from an electric motor.
Each of the modes has a defined maximum speed that the rider is assisted with. It works the same way as regular Chinese bikes, so it doesn’t matter how much you pedal—or even whether you pedal at all—the bike will always accelerate up to the maximum speed of that mode.
After unlocking the speed, you’ll reach 45 km/h, but you’ll need about 200 m for the bike to build up to that speed. Acceleration isn’t very strong because the bike is heavy, but on the other hand it’s not sluggish either. Up to 35 km/h it accelerates pretty well, but beyond that it takes longer.
Comfort while riding and suspension
The new electric bike from TESWAY features front and rear suspension. In the front, you get a standard spring fork with a locking option, which doesn’t really stand out, but it’s enough for a bike like this.
At the back, you’ll notice the large springs right away—they take care of the rear suspension. They’re fairly stiff, which you can feel especially when going over bumps at higher speeds, when the rear end starts to bounce.
Overall, riding this bike on asphalt or regular sidewalks is quite comfortable. The wide seat is meant for a relaxed ride, but for us the seating position wasn’t quite ideal. The editor who tested the bike is 185 cm tall, and at that height you’d want a slightly larger gap between the seat and the handlebars.
Wide Chao-yang tires with a size of 20 x 4″ also contribute to better comfort. They’re inflated only to 20 PSI.
Brakes and lighting
A bike this heavy deserves quality brakes. The manufacturer went with mechanical disc brakes with 180 mm rotors. Personally, we would prefer hydraulic brakes, but these ones aren’t completely bad either. During testing, the front brake started squealing noticeably, which definitely didn’t make us happy.
As for the lighting, you get a basic light in the front and a wider red light at the back, which is very easy to see. But we can’t say the same about the front light. A stronger light with better beam spread would definitely be needed here.
Battery and range
The TESWAY X5 comes with a 48V 25Ah battery, which is by no means little. The manufacturer claims a range of up to 130 km in assisted mode or 100 km in fully electric mode—though probably at the maximum speed of 25 km/h, without unlocking to 45 km/h.
The battery is large and is mounted under the seat behind a vertical frame tube, so to remove it we first need to take off the seat, which isn’t very practical. It’s secured with a key lock.
High capacity suggests good range. We also rode this bike in Košice and the surrounding area with the unlocked speed set to 45 km/h, which we used wherever the situation allowed. Since we rode very little in the city center, we often went at top speed, so we definitely didn’t go easy on the bike.
Because of the lower outdoor temperatures and less favorable October weather, we split the range test into two rides.
During the first ride, we covered 18.44 km, while the bike’s display showed 19.8 km and the first battery segment disappeared. During the second ride, we drained the battery all the way down to the last segment and rode 32.04 km. Together, on a single charge in the highest mode on fully electric mode, we managed 50,48 km (the bike showed a total of 53.7 km).
That’s absolutely not little, considering we rode completely without any help from the pedals and we were just comfortably cruising the whole way. On top of that, we had an active max speed of 45 km/h, which we used very often.
TESWAY X5: Final assessment
The electric bike TESWAY X5 is a less traditional model that, at first glance, looks more like a moped than a bicycle. Its frame design fits women and older people especially well, but it will also suit the younger generation.
Thanks to the 750 W motor and the large 25 Ah battery, it can reach a maximum speed of up to 45 km/h with excellent range—over 50 km in fully electric mode.
The wide wheels together with the suspension ensure a comfortable, trouble-free ride. An interesting extra is also the passenger seat with a backrest.
What we didn’t like about the bike is the cheap Shimano shifting and the inconvenient folding, which is made harder by the bike’s high weight. Despite the folding design, the bike doesn’t stay in position properly when folded.
