In recent months, several tech enthusiasts have noticed a trend that affects smartphones available on the European market. Some models are coming to Europe with a noticeably smaller battery than their version for the Chinese market. A striking example is the Redmi Note 14 Pro Plus from Xiaomi – while in China it has a battery with a capacity of 6200 mAh, in Europe it’s sold with a smaller 5110 mAh battery. And it’s not the only case—this same trend can also be seen in brands like Realme, Honor, and Vivo.
Why is the battery capacity in Europe being reduced?
There are no official statements from manufacturers about this phenomenon yet. However, the portal Smartzone.de lists several likely reasons. One of them is EU regulatory requirements that set limits for energy content or the amount of lithium in battery cells. New rules are also mentioned, such as the Batteries Regulation 2023/1542 and the planned ecodesign directive for sustainable products (ESPR).
Another possible reason may be the increasingly frequent use of lithium-silicon batteries, which have a different chemical composition and may be subject to different regulations. As a result, some versions of smartphones with larger batteries may not be available on the EU market at all, or only in very limited quantities.
Smartphones with different batteries by region
The most noticeable difference in battery capacity right now can be found in the already mentioned model Redmi Note 14 Pro Plus — the European version has 5 110 mAh, compared to the Chinese one with 6200 mAh (17.6% less). Xiaomi hasn’t decided yet to offer a larger-battery version on the global market. A similar situation also applies to the Redmi Note 14 series, where all global models come with weaker batteries than their Chinese equivalents.
What’s interesting is that for other smartphones the situation is the opposite—for example, the Realme 14 Pro offers a version with a larger battery on the global market, but at the same time a reduced-capacity version is also on sale. So you need to be careful about which variant you’re buying. The same applies to models like Vivo X200 Pro and Honor Magic 7 Pro, where capacity differences are also clearly evident—even within individual EU countries.
Specifically, the Honor Magic7 Pro model has a 5850 mAh battery in the global version and only 5200 mAh in the European version. By the way, the global version is fully usable here, about €250 cheaper, and available on AliExpresse. Click on this article, where we’ll show you how to get to it.
The battery downsizing also affects flagship devices like Xiaomi 15 (from 5400 mAh to 5240 mAh) and Xiaomi 15 Ultra (from 6000 mAh to 5410 mAh). The situation is complicated, but from a user’s perspective it’s a positive that at least some models are available in the full version — you just need to know where and how to get them.
Regulatory reasons or logistics?
It is also interesting that this “adjustment” most often affects popular flagships and mid-range series. For example, Honor had no problem fitting a larger battery into the Magic 7 Lite, but in the case of the main Magic 7 model, the capacity was reduced. This suggests that distribution and logistics factors also need to be taken into account – some major retailers may refuse to stock devices with large batteries because shipping them or getting them through customs duty checks is more complicated.
Another reason may be restrictions on air transport of batteries, where a higher energy content can pose a risk. This could also lead manufacturers to deliberately create less “risky” versions for the European market that pass all checks without delays or complications.
What should you watch out for when buying?
When choosing a smartphone from China or from the European market, it’s worth checking the battery capacity in the technical specifications. With some brands, such as Realme or Vivo, you may be able to choose between several versions – but with Xiaomi, which often does not offer Chinese variants globally, the selection is limited.
