Quick summary

  • The Ministry of Transport acknowledged the approval of Tesla FSD (Supervised)
  • Slovakia is the 9th EU country where the system is allowed
  • This is not autonomy; the driver remains responsible
  • Launch soon, only for cars with HW4

On October 16, 2026, Slovakia’s Ministry of Transport announced that it recognized the provisional type approval of the Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system, which was issued in April by the Dutch authority RDW. Tesla owners will therefore be able to enable it on Slovak roads as well. At the same time, Slovakia is the ninth country in the European Union that has allowed this assisted driving.

Elon Musk also noticed the news himself—on that same day he wrote on X that Tesla’s supervised self-driving has been approved in Slovakia, and added the Slovak flag. He cited a post from Tesla Europe, according to which the rollout will come soon.

What Tesla FSD can handle in Slovakia

According to the ministry, the system helps with driving in the city as well as on the highway. The car accelerates, brakes, steers, changes lanes, handles intersections, and responds to signs and traffic lights. It monitors the surroundings only with cameras, and decides on the next step using neural networks.

In Europe, Tesla renamed the system to Tesla Assisted Driving and is rolling it out with the European version of FSD v14, which is adapted to local speed limits, overtaking rules, and roundabouts. According to the website Not a Tesla App, it will be available in Europe only to cars with HW4 (AI4) hardware, so it won’t come to older Teslas for now.

It’s not an autonomous car—the steering wheel stays in your hands

The key word is Supervised in the name, which means “under supervision”. The car doesn’t drive by itself; it only assists the driver, who must always watch the road and is still fully responsible for driving. The system uses a camera to monitor whether the driver is paying attention to driving, and if not, it first warns them and then switches off.

Transport Minister Jozef Ráž summed it up simply when announcing it: „It is not a fully autonomous system, so you should not imagine it as if the driver's seat in cars would remain empty.” He also added that Slovakia is not lagging behind in modern transport technologies.

When will it launch and how much will it cost

The exact date, software version, or supported Tesla models for Slovakia have not been disclosed yet. According to Not a Tesla App, Slovak owners should get the system in the coming weeks through a standard software update.

Tesla did not announce a Slovak price. In the Netherlands, where FSD in Europe launched first, the subscription costs €99 per month, and owners with Enhanced Autopilot pay €49. Tesla also canceled one-time purchases in Europe in May. Whether the Slovak price will be the same remains to be seen when it launches.

Slovakia ranks ninth in the EU, a EU-wide vote will take place in December

The first approval came from the Netherlands, and other countries are gradually recognizing it. Slovakia joined less than a month after the Czech Republic and Croatia:

The vote on approval for the whole Union is expected no earlier than December, and the system will need the support of a qualified majority of states. According to Not a Tesla App, Germany is willing to support the system if Tesla limits the ability to set driving above the permitted speed. France and Sweden are currently against this feature for now.

Most drivers in Slovakia know from cars rather adaptive cruise control and lane keeping, which mainly help on motorways. FSD can also handle city traffic and intersections that ordinary driver-assistance systems leave to the driver. In the article about the first public ride in the Cybercabe without a steering wheel or pedals, we also covered where Tesla’s autonomy is heading.
