YouTube, as a popular platform for sharing multimedia, brings a new 1080p Premium playback quality to its website for subscribers of the YouTube Premium. tier. The feature was initially available only in the iOS app, but now it’s coming to YouTube’s web interface as well.

What’s the improvement? According to YouTube, the new 1080p Premium option is what they call a “1080p version with an improved bit rate,” which should make things look sharper—especially for detail- and motion-heavy videos.

This feature has been tested by the service since the beginning of this year, initially only for the iOS system. Some leaks about this feature suggested eliminating 1080p quality for standard users (without a YouTube Premium subscription). However, that didn’t happen.

Instead, all users can try standard 1080p quality, and subscribers also get the aforementioned 1080p Premium option. Not all videos will offer this premium option for 1080p resolution. YouTube says you won’t see it in videos uploaded in resolutions higher or lower than 1080p, short videos, or live streams.

Will the video quality improve for me?

There are many factors behind the final video quality. An improved bit rate could theoretically enhance playback, because each pixel takes in more information. Of course, it also depends on the source quality, video processing, and your internet connection.

Along with this advantage, more features are also included. As TheVerge says, iOS platform subscribers can watch videos with friends or family using FaceTime and SharePlay. A similar feature has been available for Android users for longer for all users, but through the Google Meet app.

This new and practical feature for Premium lets you continue watching videos exactly where you left off—across devices too. It supports Android, iOS, and the web interface. You’ll use it especially when you start playing your video on your smartphone and want to continue watching it later, for example, on a laptop.

Premium video ordering is also coming to tablets and smartphones. That way, you can add videos to your queue based on your preferences. There’s also an intelligent video downloading feature that launched on selected devices last year. However, you’ll need a Wi-Fi connection to download these videos. Later, you can watch them offline.

Over the past year, YouTube announced that through its Premium and Music offerings it gained around 30 million paid global subscribers, which is a significant increase compared to the total of 50 million paid subscribers YouTube talked about in 2021. So it seems this paid alternative is gaining momentum even against the competition.
