The Taiwanese company Asus has officially unveiled its new compact smartphone Asus 8Z, in the Indian market as well. It is apparently the most powerful smartphone with a display under 6 inches. It will come with last year’s processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G and also a 120 Hz AMOLED display.
Asus 8Z: New compact Asus smartphone hits the Indian market
The original model called Asus Zenfone 8 was revealed by Asus for the global market back in early May last year. The model was also expected to reach the Indian market, but the delay is likely due to the coronavirus pandemic. After nine months of waiting, this compact smartphone has now appeared for Indian fans too—under the name Asus 8Z.
News shared by the official Asus India profile also included a special guest at the smartphone launch. It will be a local celebrity or the so-called “Indian Ironman” Milind Soman. The main advantages of this device remain, just like with the global version—compact size and high performance on par with flagship phones.
These are the technical specifications of the smartphone
The new Asus 8Z model comes with a 5,92″ AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a high refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. There’s also a cut-out in the top-left corner for the front camera, HDR10+ support, 1100 nits brightness, or the latest protective glass—Corning Gorilla Glass Victus.
On the performance side, you get last year’s flagship processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G. The chipset is built using a 5 nm process, with 8GB RAM of LPDDR5, plus fast 128 GB UFS 3.1 storage. There’s no micro SD slot.
64 MPx Sony camera and up to 4000 mAh battery
The compact flagship smartphone offers a dual rear camera setup. The main sensor is a 64 MPx Sony IMX686 sensor with 4-axis OIS stabilization, complemented by a 12 MPx Sony IMX363 ultra-wide lens. It also enables high-quality macro shots. For “selfie” photos, there’s a 12 MPx Sony IMX663 sensor.
It can record 4K video with a slow-motion mode at 120 frames per second, and it also supports up to 8K video in normal recording. The package includes a 3-axis EIS stabilization as well.
Under the hood, there’s a 4000 mAh battery with 30 W fast charging. An audio jack is located on the top edge. The smartphone also features stereo speakers with Cirrus Logic amplifiers and support for Dirac HD audio technology. There’s also NFC, Wi‑Fi 6, support for two SIM cards, and a fingerprint reader integrated into the display. The Android 11 system should also be updated to Android 12.
The entire construction has enhanced protection against water and dust—even with an IP68 certification.
Price tag and availability
As we mentioned earlier, the Asus 8Z was launched only in the Indian market, in a single variant: 8 + 128 GB. Its price was set at Rs 42,999, which is 509 € / 570 $ in the converted price. It will be available in Obsidian Black and Horizon Silver, starting March 7 on the Flipkart platform.
