Android 16 is officially here! It brings the Live Updates feature inspired by iOS, a higher level of security, and a better multitasking mode for tablets

Google has unveiled a new version of its operating system, Android 16, which will first roll out to Pixel devices. One of the biggest draws of this version is the introduction of Live Updates – a feature similar to iPhone Live Activities.

Live Updates: Real-time overview

The Live Updates feature makes it easier to keep track of current events—whether you’re waiting for food delivery, getting a ride with Uber, or navigating through Maps. These notifications appear directly on the lock screen and provide important information without needing to actively switch between apps. Google has been developing this feature since 2023 and officially launched it after beta testing in early 2025.

For now, support is limited to select apps, but it’s expected to expand to other types, including sports results or public transport. According to Google, full functionality will arrive in the next system update.

An improved notification system

Android 16 also introduces a more efficient way to display notifications. Notifications from one app will now be automatically grouped together, which reduces notification clutter and keeps things easier to follow. The feature will be especially useful when you actively use messaging apps.

This significantly improves the user experience, because the notifications screen stays clearwithout constant scrolling and searching for important messages.

Support for hearing devices

Android 16 also comes with native support for hearing assistive devices. The new feature is the ability to switch the microphone from the device to the smartphone itself, which significantly improves call quality—especially in noisy environments. This option will be especially appreciated by users of LE (Low Energy) hearing devices.

In addition, Google has introduced expanded control options directly in the system, where users can set volume, a default microphone, and presets for different environments. This is a step toward better accessibility and personalization for users with hearing impairments.

Advanced Protection: Stronger privacy protection

The new version of Android also puts greater emphasis on security. Advanced Protection will deliver the highest level of protection against malicious software, phishing websites, or attacks. It’s enabled with one click and is designed for everyday users as well as those who are at greater risk (for example, journalists or public figures).

Thanks to this feature, your device’s security is simpler than ever before. Google strengthens the security framework of the system and gives users more tools to protect themselves.

Multitasking and productivity on tablets

Collaboration between Google and Samsung has brought another multitasking upgrade—desktop-style windows for tablets and foldable devices. Now you can run and adjust multiple apps at once in separate windows. It works similarly to a traditional desktop system.

Android 16 also supports its own keyboard shortcuts and a so-called taskbar overflow, for a clear overview of apps at the bottom of the screen. All of this strongly boosts productivity when working with large displays.

More interesting updates

Smaller but practical improvements are also part of Android 16. In Google Messages, you can now set custom icons for group chats and temporarily mute notifications. Google Photos received a refined editor, and Safety Check can now add extra time for your security verification.

Google Home will make smart home management easier with new shortcuts that you can pin to your watch display or to Google TV. And for Wear OS watch users, there’s now also a contactless option to tap an MHD card without needing to open the Wallet app.

Planned changes and design updates

Google has already confirmed that during 2025, the design language Material 3 Expressive will also arrive in Android 16. It’s meant to further unify and refresh the system. This update will be available for Wear OS 6, with new features improving smoothness and the visual elements of the user interface.

Android 16 shows a clear direction for the entire Android ecosystem. Better security, better multitasking, and real-time features make this version one of the biggest changes in recent years.
