48 grind levels from espresso to french press
You adjust the grind size in a range of 48 steps that the manufacturer splits into three ranges. Levels 0 to 16 are for espresso and the coffee is as fine as salt. For levels 16 to 32 you grind for drip coffee, which is medium-coarse like sugar, and 32 to 48 are for french press, where the coffee is coarse like sea salt.
Conical stones with a 48 mm diameter made of 420 stainless steel do the grinding. According to the manufacturer, they grind at low temperature and without clumps, so the coffee doesn’t lose aroma. The same-size stones are also in the HiBREW G5, which we wrote about recently, but that one is noticeably more expensive on Geekbuying.
Touch panel and grinding to a tenth of a second
The grinder is controlled via a touch panel with a display, where you choose from three modes. In manual mode, the grinder grinds while you hold the button, and in one- and two-dose modes you set the grind time with 0.1-second precision so you don’t grind unnecessary coffee.
If you hold the button for two seconds, you switch the preset based on the portafilter size (51, 54 or 58 mm). The manufacturer lists times from 5,5 seconds for a single dose into a portafilter with a diameter of 51 mm, up to 11 seconds for a double dose into the largest, 58-millimeter portafilter. You can then adjust the presets depending on the coffee you’re grinding right now.
Anti-static and grinding directly into the portafilter
Under the outlet there’s a removable holder into which you insert the portafilter from the coffee machine, and the grinder grinds into it without you having to hold it by hand. The holder fits portafilters with two or three lugs in the three most common sizes, so you can use it with most home espresso machines.
To prevent ground coffee from sticking to the walls and scattering around, the G7 has two solutions against static electricity. The chute where the coffee falls is angled at 20°, and the manufacturer adds plasma neutralization of static, so only a minimum amount of coffee should remain on the counter.
Quiet DC motor & easy cleaning
The stones are driven by a DC motor with 150 W power, which spins the stones at lower RPMs. HiBREW states it has a 20% to 30% longer service life and 5% to 15% lower noise than a standard motor, but these are manufacturer figures that we haven’t verified ourselves.
The hopper holds 160 g of beans, and the lid works like a “bellows”: after grinding, if you press it a few times, it blows out leftover coffee from the stones. The upper stone can be removed without tools, and then you clean the grinder with the included tool in six steps. The whole grinder weighs 2 kg and with a height of 35 cm it fits under a typical kitchen cabinet.
