Artillery Sidewinder X2: The upgraded 3D printer has gone through a design change

The Artillery Sidewinder X2 model directly builds on its predecessor, the Sidewinder X1 3D printer. You can spot the changes right away, from a design point of view. The main one is the Z-axis, which on the newer printer is light blue, made of plastic, and labeled with the text “Sidewinder”. The printer dimensions are 550 x 405 x 640 millimeters, and it weighs 14 kilograms.

You can also observe further design changes in the area of the holders or connector covers for the flat cable, as well as in the main board. Some of the changes were even requested by the customers themselves. The community of owners of the first generation was asking for a better mounting for the filament and its feeder, and that part was also improved.

The Sidewinder X2 3D printer offers a printing area of 400 x 300 x 300 millimeters. Connected to this is also the feature of automatic leveling and bed adjustment for printing (the X1 model has a fixed bed). The new model also includes an updated main board: the 8-bit Makerbase MKS Gen L has been replaced by a 32-bit custom model called Ruby, from Artillery.

In addition to progress in computing performance, the new board also brings a smoother operation during printing. The 3.5″ touch display with a color interface from the previous generation is retained, along with a full-size USB port. These control options haven’t changed, but the software is “open-source”, so we can also expect further tweaks and updates in the future.

Titanium extruder, improved wiring, and rich accessories in the box

The manufacturer also worked on processing and securing the wiring, which now looks more professional. At the same time, it takes user safety into account—besides better cable organization, the insulation has also been improved, as well as the power supply feed.

The printer features a Direct Drive (titanium) extruder and supports filaments made of PLA, ABS, flexible PLA, TPU, wood, PVA, HIPS and more, with a diameter of 1,75 millimeters. The printer’s nozzle diameter is 0,4 millimeters; the first layer starts at 0,1 millimeters. The minimum print speed is 150 mm/s and the maximum is 250 mm/s.

The product’s retail package includes the 3D printer body Artillery Sidewinder X2, as well as the necessary accessories. These include tools for fastening the individual parts, a USB flash drive, a power cable with a European plug, as well as a brief user manual and the initial setup instructions for the device.
