Powered legs are already a reality! With this 1000 W exoskeleton, it pushes you uphill, weighs only 2 kg, and can go up to 24 km

6. October 2026 6 min read 0 comments

Leg exoskeletons stop being just a toy from labs and are slowly turning into equipment for hikers who want to cover more kilometers in the mountains with less effort. So far, the most talked-about brand in this category was Hypershell, but AstroShell Alpha 1 exoskeleton seriously competes with it on paper. It delivers top-notch performance of 1000 W, endurance of 24 km, and two batteries you can swap without turning it off, and the whole frame made from a magnesium alloy weighs only 2 kg.

What early owners say: Up the hill you go faster and your knees hurt less

On AstroShell’s official website, the exoskeleton has 24 ratings with an average of 4.9 out of 5, and most reviewers are hikers around their sixties—people for whom steep climbs get harder year by year. Most compare it to an electric bike with pedaling assistance, because the walking effort doesn’t disappear completely, but going uphill is noticeably easier and fatigue comes much more slowly. Several also praise less knee strain on descents and the quiet operation of the motors. Pam even measured her speed and, while climbing, kept a pace of about 4 km/h instead of the usual 2.5 to 3 km/h—while her battery still had some reserve after 2.5 hours.

It doesn’t feel like it’s walking for you—more like an electric bike. You’re still doing the work, but the climb is noticeably easier. After a few minutes I almost forgot I was wearing it.

Two reservations keep coming up in the reviews. First, adjusting the straps on the belt and thighs takes about 10 minutes before everything sits properly, and wearing the exoskeleton—especially while sitting on a bench with a backrest—isn’t comfortable. Also, among the newest ratings from September there are two less enthusiastic ones: one buyer says the exoskeleton helped them at all, and the other asked the manufacturer for a replacement tightening strap for the strap. Also keep in mind these are reviews on the manufacturer’s own website, with very few independent tests so far.

A 1000 W motor responds in 2 milliseconds

You clip the AstroShell Alpha 1 around your waist and onto your thighs, and two motors sit at the hip joints—pulling your leg forward exactly when you need it. Going uphill, up stairs, or on a long hike, you feel less fatigue in your thighs and glute muscles. Hypershell X Pro’s best-known competitor has 800 W, which is 200 W less.

To make sure the assistance doesn’t come too late, movement is tracked by six sets of six-axis inertial sensors, plus angle, pressure, and torque moment sensors at the joint. The manufacturer states a response time of 2 ms, so the exoskeleton should detect a change in your step before you even realize it—and help you while walking, running, and climbing over rocks.

Swap the two batteries while walking, and the range increases to 24 km

The biggest difference compared to the competition is the power supply. The exoskeleton uses two small batteries with a capacity of 3000 mAh at 14,4 V, stored in pockets on the belt, and each weighs roughly 200 grams. According to the manufacturer, one battery lasts about 4 hours and 12 km, and with both batteries the range extends up to 24 km, with total endurance of 8 hours.

You swap the batteries while walking, and you don’t have to turn the exoskeleton off—so you can calmly pack a spare battery in your backpack. They charge via USB-C for about 2 hours, so you can top them up even from a power bank during your chat. Hypershell X Pro lists a range of 17,5 km, which is 6,5 km less.

The magnesium alloy frame weighs 2 kg and you’ll put it on in 15 seconds

The construction is made of a magnesium alloy that the manufacturer calls “aircraft-grade,” and the entire device weighs 2 kg. The belt and the thigh straps are made of durable nylon fabric and can be adjusted for people with a height from 150 to 190 cm, a waist circumference from 70 to 120 cm, and a weight up to 180 kg.

Putting it on takes 15 seconds—just turn on the belt, attach the thigh straps, and start the motors. During the tour, you can fold the exoskeleton and store it in the included case, and thanks to the hip joint range of motion up to 184°, it shouldn’t get in the way even when you kneel or squat.

Three modes, the app, and IP54 resistance

You get three modes: Smart, which automatically adjusts the assistance power to the terrain; Transparent, where the motors almost don’t help, but they also don’t slow you down; and Fitness, which does the opposite by providing resistance and strengthening your muscles. You switch between them with buttons on the side, status is shown by LED indicators, and you can also control them in the Android and iOS app that connects via Bluetooth 5.3.

The IP54 resistance means the exoskeleton can handle rain and dust, but don’t take it into water. According to the manufacturer, it works in temperatures from -20 to 60 °C, so you can take it on winter hikes too. Keep in mind, though, that the app is currently only available in English and Chinese, and AstroShell is a new brand on the market—so we don’t yet know users’ long-term experience. Hypershell X Pro costs 1,199 € in the official European price list, but AstroShell offers higher performance and a longer range for comparable money.
