Cheap cables from AliExpress for a few euros are basically no longer worth it since November, because a new customs duty of 3 € is added to each type of item from China, plus a handling fee of 2 €, and then VAT. So AliExpress charges about 6 € extra for a single cable, which is often more than the cable itself. A much more sensible choice is the branded Baseus Display 2, a USB-C cable with 100 W charging and a small display on the connector. The biggest feature of the Baseus Display 2 cable is hidden in the transparent connector, where there’s a small LED display. While charging, you can see the power in watts in real time and immediately know whether your charger is really delivering full power or you’ve only plugged in a slow one. The display is angled so you can read it even when your phone is lying on the table.

If you have more chargers at home, you’ll quickly see which one provides 20 W to your phone and which provides 45 W, and with a laptop you’ll see whether it’s enough with 65 W or whether it needs full 100 W. No more guessing by the icons on your phone—and no need to buy a separate USB tester.

100 W is enough for a laptop too

The cable handles up to 100 W, so you can use it not only for your phone, but also to charge a tablet, Nintendo Switch, or a USB-C charging laptop—for example a MacBook Air or most ultrabooks. On both sides it has a USB-C connector and works with standard chargers that support Power Delivery. For phones with fast charging up to 100 W, it won’t hold you back.

The cable body is protected by a dense braided jacket that doesn’t tangle as easily as rubber and handles bending better when in bed or in a car. You can choose between two lengths: the shorter one is 1 m and fits well in a bag with a power bank, while the longer 2 m cable is more convenient for a nightstand or a work desk.

That said, it’s mainly a charging cable. On the product page, the manufacturer doesn’t mention fast data transfer or support for video output to a monitor, so for connecting an external drive or a monitor, we recommend a cable with USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt.

Why the branded EU cable is worth more than the cheap one from China

For items from a Chinese warehouse, a customs duty of 3 € and a handling fee of 2 € are calculated for each type of item, so a bundle of cable, charger, and case in one package means triple the fees.
