We also have the Engwe Engine Pro—these are our impressions

We tested the electric bike Engwe Engine Pro in the editorial office, and it pleasantly surprised us a lot. Compared to the predecessor EP-2 Pro, which we also tested, the Engine Pro has an even more powerful 750 W motor, which you can feel especially when starting off and at top speed. With our roughly 90 kg bike, reaching 50 km/h is no problem, which is already a very decent speed.

The bike arrives in a proper box; assembly is very easy

Thick 20 x 4″ tires are extremely comfortable even on more demanding terrain, where the bike feels right at home. Before your first ride on terrain, we recommend thoroughly checking all the screws on the bike—especially tightening the folding handlebars properly.

On our ride on rough terrain, things loosened a bit, but it wasn’t anything you couldn’t fix on the spot. After tightening it properly, the issue didn’t happen again. Riding along forest paths on this bike is an unreal experience, and the motor’s performance constantly surprises us—literally putting a smile on your face. We even had the feeling we were riding a motorcycle.

We also have to highlight the very high-quality hydraulic brakes from Logan—they’re the best Chinese brakes. For example, the same brakes are used on the Nami Burn E 2 Max, a 3500-euro scooter. We also praise the stylish color display, which shows the basic data and is easy to read even in direct sunlight.

3 riding modes, up to 5 speed levels

The bike has 3 riding modes – Eco, Normal and Sport. In each mode, you can then set the speed level from 0 to 5. At level 0, the motor doesn’t help at all; at level 5, the bike is set to 99% of its power. In Sport mode and at level 2, the bike reaches speeds in the range of 20–25 km/h.

We were surprised that you can customize these speed modes in the settings – for each mode, you can set any number of % of power. If 5 speed modes is too many for you, you can even choose 3.

We’ll admit that most of the time on this bike we ride in Sport mode at speed level 5, i.e., at full power. That’s how we enjoy the ride the most. On the handlebars there’s also an accelerator lever, so you don’t actually need to pedal at all.

Of course, when you pedal, the bike is assisted by the motor—in Sport mode to a very noticeable degree, so much so that you’re spinning the pedals idle and the bike pulls only with the motor. If you want to get in at least a bit of sporty riding on this bike, we recommend setting it to Eco mode.

When it comes to the gears, the rider has an 8-speed Shimano Altus derailleur. On the front, there’s only a large chainring, with no option to change gears.

What are the disadvantages?

The throttle lever is, in our case, located on the left side, which is a bit unusual. However, there’s no problem switching the lever to the right side. We noticed that with this lever, smooth throttle control isn’t possible; it’s more like a switch between 0 and 1—so it’s either on or off.

The advantage, though, is that you can customize the bike to your taste—there’s no problem ordering a better throttle, for example even wider handlebars, because the ones from the factory are fairly narrow.

As far as the suspension goes, the front fork is nicely soft, and the advantage is the ability to adjust the springing intensity. However, this can’t be said about the rear shock—it’s quite hard and even with our 90 kg it doesn’t provide any extra cushioning. Still, it’s nothing that would prevent using the bike, but if you want to upgrade it, we’d definitely replace both the front fork and the rear shock.

Real range: The manufacturer isn’t lying

As for the range, there is a removable 16 Ah (48 V / 768 Wh) battery located in the bike frame. We tested it as follows. A rider weighing about 90 kg, we set the bike to pure electric Eco mode and speed level 5. We set out on a cycling route, so flat terrain. We rode at full power the whole time, which resulted in an average speed of 37 km/h according to the display (33.9 km/h according to GPS).

We rode for about an hour and covered 37 km according to the display (33.76 km according to GPS). Under load, the display showed 50% battery remaining. Without any pedaling—so in pure electric mode with Eco set—this bike is capable of at least 60 km. If the rider were to lose a bit of weight and choose a lower speed level, the range would certainly be extended even further.

So this figure matches exactly what the manufacturer states, which is something you often don’t see with electric vehicles of this type. We definitely give a thumbs-up for that.

Engwe Engine Pro: Our assessment

We had a blast with the Engwe EP-2 Pro during testing, and its upgraded brother, the Engwe Engine Pro, only intensifies those feelings even more. Riding the Engine Pro is simply fun, and every time you get on it, it puts a smile on your face.

Thanks to a sufficiently powerful 750 W motor, you can ride at speeds up to 50 km/h on the bike, placing it among the faster electric rideables. It’s ideal not only for the city, but also outside it, since the 16 Ah battery provides enough energy for rides up to 60 km.

We only see a few minor disadvantages of the bike in the suspension—specifically the front fork and the rear shock—which, however, isn’t a problem to replace with better components. Overall, though, we can only recommend the Engwe Engine Pro. In our subjective opinion, it’s one of the best Chinese electric fat bikes you can buy for under 1500 €.
