Most smartwatches today solve the same problem — how to get through a week without charging. Garmin Instinct 3 Solar takes a different approach: it has a monochrome MIP display that uses a fraction of the energy, and a Power Glass lens that turns sunlight into electricity. The result? In watch mode, with three hours of sun per day, you don’t have to worry about the battery at all. And now, from the French warehouse, it’s even cheaper than in Slovak shops.

Original packaging and what Slovak owners say about the watch
This particular offer on AliExpress is fresh and doesn’t have reviews yet, but the seller does — 97.1% positive ratings and a Verified Store status. In the seller’s own photos you can see a sealed Garmin retail box with European labeling, so it’s not some grey import in a bubble mailer.
More interesting are the reviews from Slovak owners on Heureka, where the model has a rating of 90 %. The same things keep coming up in them: „long battery life“, „solar charging that extends battery life“, „built-in light“, and „fits great in the hand“. One of the reviewers especially praises NFC payments and call-lifting, another one the localization into Slovak and water resistance. In the “disadvantages” section, one of them wrote word for word „I didn’t find any“ — which for watches costing three hundred is not a common sentence.
MIP display and a battery that charges itself
The key to the battery life is the display type. Instead of an AMOLED panel, you get a monochrome transreflective MIP display with a 0.9-inch diagonal and 176 × 176 pixels, plus the characteristic second window. In direct sunlight it’s more readable than any color panel, and it consumes very little power. Compared to the Instinct 2 generation, it also has double the contrast.
Battery-life numbers are the kind you don’t see often with watches: 28 days in smartwatch mode without sun, and unlimited for three hours per day at 50,000 lux. With GPS it lasts 40 hours, and up to 130 hours with sun. In expedition mode we’re talking about 36 days. For multi-day trips or an ultratrail, it’s a whole different league than watches where you’re looking for a charger every other evening.
A flashlight right on the watch — not just an emergency solution
The built-in LED flashlight was a feature of the previous generation’s flagship 2X Solar model, and now even the basic forty-five model has it. And it’s not just a symbolic flash: it has several intensity levels, a stroboscopic mode, and red light that won’t blind you or ruin night vision. When running in the dark or looking for something in a tent, it’s a function you won’t be able to do without after a few uses.
The controls stayed true to the Instinct series — five physical buttons, no fumbling with a touchscreen display with wet or cold hands. That’s one reason why Instinct keeps its fans even when the competition has color touch panels.
Military-grade durability, multiband GPS, and more than one hundred sports
The case with dimensions 45 × 45 × 14.9 mm is made of fiber-reinforced polymer; the bezel has an aluminum reinforcement, and the whole watch meets the military standard MIL-STD-810 for resistance to temperatures, impacts, and water. Water resistance is 10 ATM, i.e. 100 meters—so swimming and snorkeling are no problem. At a weight of 52 grams, you hardly notice it on your wrist.
Positioning is handled by a dual-frequency multiband GNSS with SatIQ technology, which automatically switches between modes depending on how demanding the environment is—out in open terrain it saves battery, between apartment blocks or in the forest it switches to a more precise multiband. You also get a barometric altimeter, compass, gyroscope, thermometer, heart-rate sensor, blood oxygen measurement, and more than 100 sports profiles. Garmin Pay payments are included in the base package, and the strap is 22 mm QuickFit, so you can swap it without tools.
Let’s be fair here too: a monochrome display isn’t for everyone. If you’re expecting colorful pictures on the dial and smooth animations, go for the Instinct 3 AMOLED instead. Instinct 3 Solar is built on the exact opposite philosophy — readability, durability, and battery life at the expense of flash. There’s also no music storage, so running with the watch without your phone and with your own playlist won’t work.
