Huawei won’t be able to use its 5G technology anymore even in the UK. A new government decision makes it so

The trade war between the USA and China continues as well. On top of that, the USA is putting pressure on other third parties not to cooperate with Huawei. As is publicly known, the Chinese Huawei is a leader in the development and deployment of 5G networks. Great Britain has now started blocking the construction of a 5G network, precisely due to pressure from the USA.

Great Britain: Pressure from the USA

Huawei is currently literally trying to save its existence due to the trade war that is still active between the USA and China. The Chinese manufacturer is now facing another restriction—this time from Great Britain.

After the meeting of the British National Security Council, the British government announced which companies Huawei is banned from distributing its 5G networks through. However, this is not a decision made overnight, as until now this government has been indifferent toward the Chinese company. The new decision is probably coming after pressure from the USA.

For reminder: just a few months ago, the British government announced approval for this company to build 5G infrastructure. At that time, it was truly a major win for the Chinese manufacturer. Today, however, the situation is different—and the Chinese manufacturer clearly can’t celebrate.

The meeting where this decision was adopted was chaired by the UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. The result is the gradual removal of all Huawei equipment from networks in Great Britain.

British operators then have seven years to completely remove all devices from that brand from their network. What’s more, none of these mobile operators can buy devices from this Chinese manufacturer after 31. December 2020.

Huawei: Summary of decisions from the meeting

1. The purchase of all Huawei devices for 5G technologies is allowed only until 31. December 2020.
2. All existing Huawei devices must not be located in the 5G network in Great Britain until the end of the year 2027.
3. Those who decided to use Huawei devices until 2027 are not allowed to have their devices in the sensitive core parts of the 5G network.
4. In a statement by Secretary Oliver Dowden, it says: “Until the next elections, by law we will have an irreversible path in place to fully remove Huawei devices from our 5G network.”

It’s clear that the Great Britain market is a big loss. The Chinese manufacturer will therefore have to go back to the beginning. To expand its portfolio within 5G technologies, it will need to focus on other available markets.
