Honor 4 Play Pro is being sold at inflated prices due to its IR thermometer feature

Honor, Huawei's subsidiary brand, recently introduced its new smartphone Honor Play 4 with both a base and a Pro version. The better version has an exclusive feature - a IR thermometer, which is why it now carries a seriously inflated price tag with some sellers.

Smartphone with an IR thermometer

Smartphone makers are always trying to come up with some kind of innovation. Often, it ends up being nothing more than an improvement in memory, the camera, or—for example—the display refresh rate. Honor, however, responded to the current pandemic situation in a truly creative way.

They've added an IR thermometer function to their Honor Play 4 Pro smartphone. It can measure a person's temperature just by holding it against them. Such a phone is truly a versatile device. Using a special sensor you can measure the temperature within a range of -20 to 100 °C in just a few moments.

Overpriced prices

But unlicensed sellers have latched onto this great feature and immediately started selling the Honor Play 4 Pro with inflated price tags. In China, prices are set by the manufacturer, but for instance in the US it appeared for a ridiculous 999 USD.

More precisely, it’s the price tag on the well-known eBay online marketplace. The seller probably won’t see much success with that price.

The price in its home market in China for the Honor Play 4 Pro 8 + 128 GB version is set at 2,899 yuan, which is approximately €363 / 407 USD. So we can see a markup of almost 600 US dollars.

This smartphone, however, doesn’t stand out with many other specs—of course, apart from the aforementioned IR thermometer. The second downside is that the device doesn’t support our B20 telecom networks, meaning it’s basically unusable in Europe.

We haven't yet heard any news about its global version, and most likely it will remain a purely China-only matter. Write to us in the comments whether you'd use the thermometer function on a smartphone and whether you'd be able to pay extra for such a device.
