Quick summary

  • According to the leak, the OnePlus 16 is set to get a custom BOE display with a new lighting material, X4.
  • The novelty should be 165 Hz across the whole system, not just in selected apps and games.
  • The phone is also expected to feature a custom display chip with three-stage calibration.
  • The rest of the specs: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, a battery around 9,000 mAh, and a 200MPx periscope.
  • The launch is expected in October, with ColorOS 17 running on the system.

OnePlus is clearly putting the most emphasis on the display on its flagship this year. According to a fresh leak, the OnePlus 16 will get a custom-made BOE panel and something nobody else is bragging about yet: a 165 Hz system-wide refresh rate, not only in games and selected apps.

Custom panel and X4 material

The information comes from a fresh post by the leaker Digital Chat Station on Weibo, who summarized the Gizmochina website. At the core is BOE’s X4 light-emitting material, which the Chinese panel manufacturer developed specifically for this phone. In practice, the new emissive material means higher brightness at lower power consumption and a longer display lifespan.

This is supposed to be followed by 165 Hz across the whole system. The difference compared to the usual approach is bigger than it seems: most phones with high refresh rates keep it only in certain modes and then drop to 120 or 60 Hz. System-wide 165 Hz is more demanding on performance and the battery, and that’s exactly why no one has offered it yet.

A custom display chip and three calibrations

There’s also mention of a custom display chip made using a new manufacturing process. According to the leaker, it will go through three separate calibrations. A standalone image chip isn’t a new idea. The competition uses it for smoother rendering and frame interpolation. In combination with 165 Hz, it makes sense, because it takes some workload off the main processor.

It’s also expected to add Oppa’s latest eye-protection technology and narrow bezels on all four sides. Software-wise, the phone will run on ColorOS 17, with animations designed specifically for the higher refresh rate. Without that, the system-wide 165 Hz would lose half of its point.

Games as the main focus

That OnePlus is aiming at gamers was also confirmed by the company itself. At a Chinese event, the brand’s leadership announced for the sixteen a refined Fengchi gaming core, support for a 165 Hz and higher refresh rate, a custom touch chip, and a system of three e-sports chips. In games, the Oriental Screen 4.0 display mode is expected to be used.

The rest of the specs so far come only from leaks, but they sound just as generous: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, a battery with capacity close to 9 000 mAh, and a camera setup built around a 200MPx periscope telephoto lens plus a 50MPx main sensor and a 50MPx ultra-wide-angle sensor. As for the rest of the photography hardware, the leaker is still vague, only promising an “upgrade”.

When will we get it

The OnePlus 16 release is expected in October, first for the home China market. Until then, you can expect another wave of leaks, because OnePlus reveals its flagships piece by piece for weeks in advance.

The photo at the start of the article is for reference: the previous generation OnePlus 15. What the Sixteen will look like is still officially unknown for now. The first teaser shows only the phone’s covered silhouette.
