Today is the official launch day of the long-awaited OnePlus 8 smartphone, with specifications that place it among the absolute top tier on the market.

This Chinese company started out with a strategy of cheap but still high-quality smartphones—just like, for example, Xiaomi. Over time, however, it transformed into a premium brand, which was also confirmed by the prices of previous models.

Right now, it’s the 4th best premium smartphone brand in the world and the fastest-growing smartphone brand in the USA.

But the OnePlus 8 Pro takes things to an even higher level, and this model definitely won’t be affordable for everyone. It really is a technological top-of-the-line device—and literally.

First video review:

Visually similar to its predecessor

The design won’t impress an experienced smartphone brand fan. The back has a similar look to the previous seventh-generation model. 3 cameras are stacked in the middle vertically; the telephoto sensor sits separately on the left, and below it you’ll find a dual LED flash with a laser autofocus sensor.

The front is almost bezelless, with a curved display at the edges – just like the OnePlus 7 Pro or 7T Pro. This topic has been discussed a lot and debated often, because a large number of fans simply don’t like this kind of curve.

The front also features a perforation for the 16 MPx selfie camera, which we’ll cover in more detail. There’s also a front speaker that, together with the main unit, delivers high-quality stereo sound.

The smartphone measures 74.3 x 165.3 x 8.5 mm and weighs 199 grams.

3 color combinations

The leaks were completely accurate in terms of color combinations, and OnePlus 8 Pro is available in three colors: green (Glacial Green), black (Onyx Black), and blue (Ultramarine Blue).

The back is made of glass, and the manufacturer promises a satisfying touch thanks to the matte “matt-frosted” finish that we already know from OnePlus—this is truly real quality.

Beautiful 120 Hz AMOLED

The new flagship includes, as expected, a 6.78″ Fluid AMOLED panel with a refresh rate up to 120 Hz and a sampling rate of 240 Hz. This delivers an outstanding user experience with a display that feels maximally smooth.

Even at the maximum refresh rate, the resolution remains the original one – the WQHD+ (1440 x 3168 px). Pixel density is an incredible 513 ppi. It supports HDR10+ and Gorilla Glass 6 was used for better protection.

The JNCD value is 0.4 (the lower, the better), and the colors you see on the display are almost identical to reality. For comparison, Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro received a JNCD≈0.55 score. It offers 10-bit colors (up to 1.07 billion colors total) and brightness of 1300 nits.

The best display in the world

The display also earned a DisplayMate A+ rating along with 13 additional records in this area, earning it the title of the best display in the world.

It also includes an in-display fingerprint sensor that OnePlus makes very fast. Another unlocking option is facial recognition.

Snapdragon 865 and LPDDR5 RAM

OnePlus 8 Pro couldn’t have come with anything other than the Snapdragon 865. The 7 nm processor runs at 2.84 GHz, and it’s paired with a graphics chip Adreno 650. Among its native technologies is 5G support.

LPDDR5 RAM was introduced this year and is currently among the fastest. OnePlus 8 Pro comes with it in every variant. Storage is UFS 3.0 with Turbo Write and HPB.

It will be available in only two versions: 8 GB RAM + 128 GB and 12 GB + 256 GB.

48 MPx quad world-class camera

OnePlus is one of the best manufacturers in the photography segment. With its previous 7 Pro model, it scored 114 points in the DxOMark test, placing it among the best cameras of that time.

OnePlus 8 Pro comes with a powerful main 48 MPx Sony IMX689 sensor with an aperture of ƒ/ 1.7 and pixel size of 0.80 µm. Its size is 1/14″ and it delivers great dynamic range.

The ultra-wide-angle 48 MPx Sony IMX586 Exmor RS sensor is also top-notch, with a field of view of 120°. Thanks to this sensor, image quality doesn’t degrade and it captures crazy levels of detail even when zooming in.

The 8 MPx telephoto sensor offers 3x optical zoom and an aperture of ƒ/ 2.2. With digital, you can reach up to 30x zoom.

The special 5 MPx “color filter” sensor helps you capture beautiful artistic shots with special lighting effects and filters.

16 MPx selfie camera

Up front you’ll find a 16 MPx Sony IMX471 Exmor RS sensor with an aperture of ƒ/ 2.4 and a pixel size of 1.00 µm.

4K video and hybrid stabilization

The 8 Pro can record 4K video at 60 and 30 fps. Super slow motion is available in 720p at 480 fps and 1080p at 240 fps.

Just like the previous generation, the OnePlus 8 Pro also features hybrid image stabilization in combination with optical and electronic stabilization.

4510 mAh battery and ultra-fast wireless charging

The OnePlus 8 Pro includes the biggest battery yet, with a capacity of 4510 mAh. With a demanding display and 5G support, you’ll literally appreciate every single amp.

One of the best features is undoubtedly ultra-fast 30 W wireless charging, which charges 50% in just 30 minutes. You can also charge other devices with the OnePlus 8 Pro using 3 W reverse charging.

Wired charging is also very fast at 30 W.

Of course, support for 5G and NFC

At the launch, the manufacturer proudly claimed it was the first to bring a 5G smartphone to the UK, and there’s no doubt it’s a brand that keeps working to innovate its products.

The new processor makes it easy for manufacturers to implement 5G technology support. It’s also included on the flagship OnePlus model, along with NFC.

More premium features

Like the other top smartphones this year, the OnePlus 8 comes with Wi-Fi 6 technology, letting you achieve higher speeds.

You also get haptic vibrations 2.0, which we saw in the previous generation. It delivers a more natural vibration feel.

High-quality spatial sound is handled by two speakers certified with Dolby Atmos. Together, the main speaker will work with the front speaker for very high-quality audio.

You also get the latest Bluetooth 5.1 standard with aptX & aptX HD & LDAC & AAC codecs.

A pleasant surprise is also the water- and dust-resistance certification IP68, which was missing on previous smartphones due to cost-cutting.

Your jaw will drop from the price

As always, OnePlus has now announced the smartphone globally. That means prices were set for our region too. From the following numbers, your jaw might drop—so if you were hoping for something cheaper, we’ll disappoint you.

The 8 + 128 GB version is priced at 899 € / 24 150 CZK, and 12 + 256 GB at up to 999 € / 26 820 CZK. So these are real “shots to the jaw”, and the company’s current strategy is clearly visible in the pricing.
