Display: Fluid AMOLED
That brief delay before the official launch ensures the technical specifications are very similar. All three smartphones come with a Fluid AMOLED display with HDR10+ technology and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protective glass.
The main difference of the latest OnePlus 8T is, however, in the display shape – while the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro offer the so-called “waterfall display,” the newest of the trio comes with a classic flat panel, which a lot of fans were happy about, and we give them credit for that as well. Curved displays cause problems with screen protectors and often also make operation more difficult.

The OnePlus 8 will offer an aspect ratio of 20:9, a 6.55″ display and Full HD+ resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels). The display sharpness tops out at 402 ppi and it also brings a refresh rate of 90 Hz.
The OnePlus 8 Pro offers an upgraded panel with a 6.78″ diagonal and 1440p resolution (3168 x 1440 pixels). Sharpness increases up to 513 ppi, and the higher refresh rate tops out at as much as 120 Hz in this case.

A sort of middle ground and a gentle compromise between both worlds is provided by the newest model OnePlus 8T. This device offers a 6.55″ display diagonal, Full HD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels) resolution, and a high refresh rate of up to 120 Hz.
Performance: Three times Snapdragon 865
The performance page is also very similar, given the introduction of all three devices in April and October 2020. All three models include an octa-core flagship processor Snapdragon 865 built on a 7 nm+ process. In all smartphones, it is paired with the Adreno 650 graphics accelerator.
A lot of users were hoping for the latest Snapdragon 865+, but this year it’s used in a truly minimal number of smartphones. The Chinese giant has apparently decided to skip it due to its price and the small performance difference compared to the base Snapdragon 865. This move makes sense, and it also allowed them to save on the device.

There’s no doubt that this hardware is up to handling demanding multitasking and every, truly every app from the Play Store—including graphically demanding games. The trio comes in configurations of 8 / 12 GB RAM and also 128 / 256 GB of storage of type UFS 3.0 (OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro) or UFS 3.1 (OnePlus 8T). They don’t offer a microSD card slot.
Camera: Again, the well-known 48 Mpx Sony sensor
When it comes to the camera, in this case things get a bit tangled. OnePlus 8 offers three rear cameras. It includes a 48 MPx main Sony IMX586 sensor with optical stabilization, complemented by a 16 MPx ultra-wide sensor and a 2 MPx macro sensor. Video can be recorded in up to 4K resolution (30 / 60 fps), and the front camera offers 16 MPx, housed in a punch-hole within the display.
OnePlus 8 Pro already features four rear sensors. The main one Sony IMX689 delivers 48 MPx, laser autofocus, and optical stabilization. This camera setup is complemented by another 48 MPx sensor that’s ultra-wide with a 120-degree field of view and also doubles as a macro sensor. There’s also an 8 MPx telephoto lens with optical stabilization and 3x optical zoom. The fourth is the controversial 5 MPx Color-filter sensor, which we covered in a separate article. 4K video recording support (30 / 60 fps) can’t be missing, and the front camera has 16 MPx.
The new OnePlus 8T is again a compromise—some kind of combination of the features from the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro models. It offers the same 48 MPx main sensor Sony IMX586 as the OnePlus 8, enhanced with a 16 MPx ultra-wide sensor, a 5 MPx macro sensor, and a 2 MPx depth sensor. 4K (30 / 60 fps) video support is also included, and the front camera provides 16 MPx. It’s also placed in a punch-hole in the display.
Considering that the OnePlus 8T uses as its main camera sensor a 3-year-old hardware that was also used in the OnePlus 7, we’re slightly disappointed with the camera page.
Battery: Fast charging up to 65W
As for the battery, OnePlus 8 offers a capacity of 4300 mAh, while the OnePlus 8 Pro, thanks to its slightly smaller display, offers up to 4510 mAh, and the new OnePlus 8T then has exactly 4500 mAh. Thanks to the new processor and excellent software optimization, all three smartphones deliver very good battery life on a single charge, and a demanding workday definitely won’t be a problem either.

There’s also very popular fast charging— the older pair of devices, OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, offers 30 W wired charging. The new and improved OnePlus 8T then supports up to 65 W fast wired charging. The duo—OnePlus 8T and 8 Pro—also includes support for fast wireless charging, and even reverse charging, which comes in handy for charging accessories, for example.
However, what the new flagship OnePlus 8T lacks is wireless charging, just like the base model OnePlus 8. OnePlus 8 Pro is the only one in this trio that supports 30 W wireless and 3 W reverse charging. We also consider this a negative.

All three smartphones, the latest OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 8 Pro and also OnePlus 8, are sold via the official OnePlus website, but you can also find them in the offer from international sellers for significantly less than anywhere else. Final verdict: OnePlus 8T, OnePlus 8 Pro and OnePlus 8
OnePlus smartphones are currently full-fledged flagship models, but they’re also made for three different types of users. OnePlus 8 has been available for a long time and comes with solid specs—it’s especially for those who want to save a few extra euros. OnePlus 8 Pro is then for a completely different user segment—it’s for those who want the very best that’s available.
OnePlus 8 Pro stands apart from the more affordable OnePlus 30 with its premium specs, led by 68 W wireless charging, official IP689 certification, a better main Sony IMX120 sensor, and a 8 Hz refresh rate.

OnePlus 8T is a device that adopted most of the top features from the OnePlus 8 Pro, but with a price compromise. Instead of wireless charging, you get the fastest 65 W standard from the company, plus a still great and, most importantly, flat 120 Hz AMOLED with improved brightness and contrast properties, along with equally top-tier hardware with optimized performance. However, it lacks IP certification and a major camera upgrade (only the design of the rear module has changed).
But the strongest point of the new OnePlus 8T is—its price. It’s surprisingly low, but we still can’t really call it a flagship killer. In Europe, the price tag for the 8 + 128 GB version was set at €599 and it’s currently available in pre-order for €629. For comparison, the base OnePlus 8 used to be sold for €699, but with weaker specs.
If, however, you already own the eighth-generation OnePlus smartphone from the start of the year—or a smartphone from another brand with similar performance—upgrading to the OnePlus 8T is probably unnecessary. But if you want longer software support, a flat AMOLED display, extreme 65 W charging, and a new design, then go for it.
