Fast charging is becoming increasingly more popular among smartphone users. The main and universal charging protocol is now under Qualcomm, which has just unveiled the Quick Charge 5 protocol.

The new charging protocol will support more than 100 W charging—something that’s always welcome these days when it comes to pushing and boosting charging power. Want to learn more about the new universal fast charging? Keep reading.

100 W and more

Charging as a whole is simply about communication between the power adapter, the battery, and the smartphone’s processor. For fast charging to happen, all of these components need to support the same charging protocol.

The latest charging protocol introduced by Qualcomm is called Quick Charge 5. This protocol will support more than 100 W charging, while the supported and communicative processors are, for now Snapdragon 865 and its improved version 865+.

Current mid-range processors like Snapdragon 690, 720G, or 765G do not support this protocol. However, Qualcomm promises that Quick Charge 5 will be implemented on mid-range processors in the future.

According to the manufacturer, the new charging is up to 70% more efficient than its predecessor in the form of Quick Charge 4 / 4+, 10x more powerful than the Quick Charge 1 protocol, 4x faster than 4 / 4+ and with 10° better cooling than again Quick Charge 4 / 4+.

Now you might wonder what it means for the battery life itself, and whether it will blow it up after a few charging sessions. Qualcomm has an answer to that question too, in the form of Smart intelligent power identification.

Thanks to intelligent adjustment of total voltage and a range of overvoltage and temperature protections, you don’t have to worry about your smartphone’s safety at all. The voltage range will be 3,3 V to 20 V, and the current range will be 3 A to 5 A, or more.

Quick Charge 5 uses the technology Dual Charge. That means the battery in your smartphone will be split into two separate branches, which can be charged at 50 W. A 4,500 mAh battery will deliver 50% of power in 5 minutes, and within 15 minutes it will be fully charged.

The manufacturer Qualcomm also claims that Quick Charge 5 will be compatible with charging adapters featuring Quick Charge 5/4/4+/3/3+/2. Of course, depending on the adapter protocol, the maximum charging speed will also be supported.
