Packaging contents & quality

The Atomi Alpha e-scooter was delivered to us by DPD courier in a box measuring 121.5 x 55 x 17 cm with a total weight of 20.5 kg. The scooter is packed in just one box, but that one is made of fairly thick cardboard.

Inside, it’s secured in molded foam supports that protect the scooter from damage. The individual parts don’t rub against each other, so we received the scooter in perfect condition.

In the box, the scooter is of course assembled with the handlebars removed, just like with other similar scooters. You’ll also find the charger with a European plug, the manual, an Allen key, and a pair of screws.

Assembling the scooter is very easy

As we already hinted in the previous chapter, the Atomi Alpha scooter is placed in the box in a folded state. So you basically just need to take it out of the box, attach the handlebars into place, and you can ride.

Inside the main stem leading to the handlebars, there’s a cable with a connector that needs to be plugged into the other connector on the cable protruding from the handlebars. The cable is long enough and not under tension, so you don’t have to worry about it springing back into the stem.

After connecting the cables using the connector, we simply inserted the handlebars into the stem and secured them with two screws. Most scooters use four screws that hold the handlebars from both the front and the rear. Here, there are only two screws that hold the handlebars from the front. Still, we don’t feel that the handlebars are held inadequately.

After we secured everything, we also inflated the tires again, because their pressure was only around 20 psi. Then you just need to turn on the scooter and you’re ready to ride. No other components need to be attached.

Design and build quality

From the scooter’s design alone, it’s clear it’s meant mainly for the city. It has smaller 9″ wheels and a standard folding design similar to many other electric scooters. However, there are a few interesting special features you don’t usually come across.

Its dimensions when folded out are 113.5 x 55.5 x 119 cm, and when folded in they are 122 x 17.5 x 56 cm. It weighs 16.4 kg, so it’s not among the lightest e-scooters, but for us, that weight is still perfectly fine.

We had the scooter available in white, which in reality is more of a silver color, but you can also choose black or green—those are quite interesting.

Of course, the scooter’s entire construction is made of metal, and the quality is very good. The individual parts are mostly sturdy enough and give a quality impression. The foot platform is rubberized, but it’s kind of too narrow. It’s only 15.5 cm wide, and its edges are noticeably rounded, which isn’t ideal for bigger feet.

An integrated lock is built into the side of the chassis, and there’s also ambient lighting, turn signals, and rear suspension. We’ll talk more about these components later.

Impressive ambient lighting

The target audience for the Atomi Alpha scooter is clearly more on the younger side, which is also suggested by the unconventional ambient lighting that’s genuinely interesting. Backlighting the chassis isn’t anything unusual, but here you’ll also find additional lighting in the form of an LED strip on the front vertical steering column.

This strip runs along almost the entire length of the column, and besides looking stylish, it also helps improve visibility of the scooter. The overall ambient lighting—so both the bottom light and the front light—is controlled together via the app. You can’t turn just one of them on or off; the settings always apply to both at the same time.

Besides turning it on or off, you can also choose a specific color from a wide range, or up to 14 different effects that are really interesting. They include various flashing effects or a gradual color change.

You can also adjust the intensity of the ambient lighting on a scale from 0 to 100 %.

Handlebars and display

The handlebars are 55 cm wide, and the rubberized grips feel really comfortable to hold and don’t slip at all. On the left side, there’s a front brake lever, a turn-signal controller, and a small bell.

The right side has only the throttle control, and in the center of the handlebars you’ll find a display. Besides the current speed, it shows the battery status, the lights status, riding mode, and the distance covered. Its readability is quite good, although on direct sunlight we would have liked a higher brightness.

The only real drawback we’d point out is the display design and the surrounding glossy frame, where fingerprints get caught. This combination in the triangular element with the display set a bit deeper looks slightly odd.

Performance, riding modes, and ride comfort

Let’s get to the most important part: performance and the comfort of the ride. The motor has a rated power of 350 W and a maximum power of 650 – 700 W (the manual lists 700 W, the website 650 W). It’s located in the rear wheel and is extremely quiet.

Its maximum speed is 30 km/h in Sport mode. However, you need to enable this speed in the app. Otherwise, the top speed is only the traditional 25 km/h. The remaining Eco and Normal modes offer speeds of 6 and 18 km/h.

We’d especially like to draw your attention to the suspension in the rear, in front of the rear wheel. It’s surprisingly exceptionally good and effective. Its stiffness is set really well, and we have to admit this is one of the best-tuned suspensions among city scooters.

As for the braking system, you get a front drum brake and an electronic brake—E-ABS. The drum brake’s effectiveness isn’t the best, and overall we don’t really like this type of brakes on scooters. On top of that, even the electronic brake doesn’t bite very noticeably. The scooter definitely deserves better brakes.

Atomi app

You can find the Atomi app in the Google Play store and the Apple Store. We use Android, and after searching for “Atomi,” the app appears somewhat low in the search results. Still, you can also access it by scanning the QR code from the manual.

Connecting the e-scooter is very easy. Just turn on Bluetooth, search for devices nearby, and the scooter app will immediately find it. Then, after you click the Add button, everything will happen automatically until the welcome screen appears.

It shows the scooter, battery status, mileage or trip, and a few settings. These include choosing a riding mode, locking the scooter, controlling the lights, ambient lighting, cruise control, or starting from zero.

There’s also ride tracking on a map with route recording, or more detailed battery information. The app runs reliably, but it has a few bugs. The scooter’s total mileage shows nonsense—because with the scooter we’ve only ridden a little over 25 km, yet the app displays more than 200 km in total.

Another issue is that route recording in Google Maps doesn’t work well at all. The displayed route consists of a few straight lines that run through buildings and cross the streets at odd angles.

Battery and range

The Atomi Alpha runs on a 36 V system with a 10 Ah battery. That suggests not-so-great range, but the manufacturer states a fairly realistic range of around 20 km per charge. The maximum range should be 40 km, of course only in ECO mode under ideal conditions.

We tested the e-scooter during winter at a temperature of around 7 °C, and we tracked the distance travelled using the Atomi app, the Runkeeper app, and also on the e-scooter display. We rode in Košice in sports mode with a maximum speed of 30 km/h. We didn’t hold back at all and rode at maximum speed wherever possible.

The Atomi app measured 15.6 km, Runkeeper measured 13.6 km, and the scooter itself measured 15 km. We trust the Runkeeper app the most in this case.

After the test ride in the streets of Košice, the app showed a remaining battery capacity of 36%. The manufacturer-stated range of 20 km is therefore quite realistic, but if we wanted to go farther, we would have to reduce our speed to 25 km/h or use a weaker mode.

The battery charges in about 6 hours, and the charging port is neatly hidden behind the scooter’s backrest and a rubber cover.

Integrated lock and turn signals

The lock integrated into the scooter’s bottom platform is truly a very unusual and interesting feature. The metal cable is 70 cm long and is hidden under a cover—you can simply pull it out, thread it around a bike stand, and lock it into the chassis. Unlocking is done with a numeric code consisting of three dials.

There are therefore 1000 different combinations of the numeric code, which is great, but the steel cable itself doesn’t provide very high security. It’s very thin, so it’s not really difficult to quickly cut through.

The preset numeric code is 000, and a reset button is used to change it. The principle is the same as with other numeric locks, so you can set your own code by switching this button, which you then confirm by returning it to its original position.

Another interesting feature of the Atomi Alpha scooter is the turn signals. They’re located at the back on both sides of the rear fender. They’re clearly visible and are turned on using a switch with two buttons on the left side of the handlebars.

Folding mechanism

You can easily and quickly fold the scooter if you need to carry it. It folds using a lever with a latch at the folding joint, which also conveniently hides the wiring.

After folding, you can see the cables, which we personally like much more than on other scooters where the cables are routed on the outside and can get in the way.

After folding, the hook on the handlebars locks into an opening on the rear fender, and we can easily carry the scooter. The main stem is fairly thick, though, so it’s not ideal for smaller hands.

Atomi Alpha: Final evaluation

The electric scooter Atomi Alpha is a very interesting new model with several features you don’t usually find on electric scooters in this category. It has turn signals, ambient backlighting with an LED strip also on the main stem leading to the handlebars, and an integrated numeric lock with a steel cable.

A 350 W motor handles the power with a maximum output of 650 – 700 W and a 36 V / 10 Ah battery. You’ll also like the built-in app, the display, and the really good rear suspension, which works truly excellently. Overall ride comfort is therefore at a very solid level thanks to the suspension.

Our negatives include a drum front brake that could have higher efficiency, an average battery, and a fairly narrow foot platform. Overall, though, this e-scooter pleasantly surprised us and we definitely rank it among the best urban e-scooters we’ve had the chance to test.
