Packaging contents & quality
The Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe TV box was delivered to us by the courier in a compact box measuring just 200 x 135 x 58 mm, with a total weight of 609 g.
Inside the box you’ll find the TV box itself in a protective molded cardboard insert, with the accessories stored underneath. These include a power adapter, a remote control, and an HDMI cable. There’s also a user manual.
The box is made of rigid cardboard, and the TV box is sufficiently protected against damage during shipping.
Design and build quality
In terms of design, many Chinese TV boxes are absolutely crazy—colorful and look like they’re straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe doesn’t fit that category, and its design is elegant and executed very well.
It’s made of plastic, but the workmanship is at a high level. The look is finished with a glossy top cover with the brand logo, which gives the TV box its distinctive design.
As for the placement of individual elements, on the front you’ll find only three status indicator LEDs, while the ports for external connections are located on the left and back sides. Specifically, it’s 2 x USB, a microSD card slot, a 3.5 mm port, SPDIF, AV, HDMI, LAN, and a power port.
The TV box doesn’t have active cooling, so it doesn’t make any unnecessary noise.
Powerful hardware with 4K support
Performance is handled mainly by the quad-core Amlogic S905X4 processor, which consists of ARM Cortex-A55 cores. It supports AV1 HDR and 4K HDR at 60 fps. So you’re not getting some cheap low-resolution TV box—on the contrary, it ranks among the top models in the range of Chinese Android TV boxes.
The processor is supported by DDR4 type RAM with a capacity of 4 GB and internal storage (EMMC) with a capacity of 32 GB. For comparison, the popular Xiaomi TV Box S (2nd generation) has 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB ROM.
Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support is also included, along with HDR, HDR10+, or HLG. The TV box can handle a wide range of codecs, including H.265 (HEVC) and others that you’ll find in the specs table.
You don’t need to worry about a lack of performance, because this TV box comes with a beefy hardware setup that ensures smooth, trouble-free operation.
Android TV system
Since the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe comes with Widevine L1 security, it’s an officially certified TV box for Google and other streaming platforms such as Netflix and Disney+. That means you can enjoy your favorite movies and series here in the highest quality, without any restrictions.
Right after powering it on, you’ll be greeted by the Android TV interface in version 11. Initial setup can also be done via a smartphone, so you can avoid typing passwords on the remote and simply copy your Google account using your phone.
You can also import apps during the initial setup just as easily—apps you were using on another device that was linked to your Google account.
Because it’s based on the standard Android TV system, you won’t have your experience spoiled by unnecessary preinstalled apps that you’ll never use. Besides Google services, it only comes with Netflix and prime video, YouTube, and apps for remapping buttons.
Thanks to Android TV, you can install various apps from the Google Play store that are tailored for TV screens. We used, for example, KODI for multimedia content and AntikTV for watching TV channels. But you’ll also find many others like Skylink, Magio TV, VOYO, Orange TV, or O2 TV, and more.
The system is perfectly smooth—your remote responds instantly, and we noticed absolutely no lag or stuttering. The Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe is well-tuned for a flawless user experience.
Remote control with lots of buttons
While most TV boxes include only a minimalist remote control with a minimal number of buttons, Mecool is the exception. The remote is fairly large, measuring 18.4 x 3.9 x 1.8 cm, and it has truly lots of buttons.
There’s even a traditional number pad or four colored buttons. You’ll also find standard directional buttons with confirmation in the center, a way to go to settings, the home screen, voice control, and more.
You also get dedicated buttons for popular services like YouTube, Netflix, prime video, and Google Play. With the preinstalled App Key Definition app, you can change what these four buttons do. You can choose from all installed apps.
The remote sits comfortably in your hand and the buttons feel nice to press. Personally, though, we’d also be fine with a smaller remote—having a number pad together with some extra buttons wouldn’t be missed at all.
Connectivity and connection options
As we mentioned in the introduction, the Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe is richly equipped when it comes to connectivity. For physical connectivity, you get two USB 2.0 ports, one HDMI 2.1, a microSD card slot, an SPDIF port for optical soundbar connection, an AV CVBS & L/R output, a 3.5 mm port for connecting headphones, and a LAN port with a speed of 1 Gbit/s.
However, to play content from a USB stick, you’ll need any media player, because Android TV doesn’t come with one included. The USB stick is recognized, but there’s no app for browsing or playing files.
For wireless connectivity, you can look forward to WiFi 6 in both bands (2.4 and 5 GHz) or Bluetooth 5.0. These aren’t the very latest standards, but WiFi in version 6 will definitely please, since it’s still not a given—and certainly not in Chinese TV boxes.
Of course, it also includes a built-in Chromecast for sharing content from your smartphone or tablet.
Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe: Final verdict
The Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe TV box is one of the best Chinese TV boxes on the market. It supports 4K resolution at 60 fps, AV1 and H.265 codecs with HDR, offers plenty of connectivity options, and runs Android TV on version 11.
The system is ideal for TVs with support for many apps. You can also look forward to official Netflix support and other streaming services thanks to Widevine L1. You’ll also appreciate the LAN port with a speed of 1 Gbit/s and WiFi 6 in both bands.
With a TV box this packed, downsides are hard to find — so we can clearly recommend it to everyone, including more demanding users who care about 4K resolution.
