A popular model on the market of foldable e-bikes from China, PVY Z20 Pro. It’s a classic foldable bike with a design we already know well thanks to other brands. It offers a 250 W motor, a 10.4 Ah battery with a maximum range of around 50 – 80 km.

In the review, we’ll look at the build quality of the individual components and focus mainly on riding characteristics, overall comfort, and performance.

Packaging contents & quality

An e-bike PVY Z20 Pro was delivered to us by a DPD courier in a fairly large and heavy box. Its total weight was around 34 kg, and the dimensions were 90.5 x 66 x 41 cm. The box is made of thick cardboard, so it won’t get damaged easily.

Even so, the bike is packed inside really well. Almost all parts that could be damaged are nicely wrapped in foam inserts or covered with protective film. The packaging quality is excellent, which we really appreciate.

We also received a set of two free gifts: a cover for the bike and a smartphone holder. The cover can, of course, be used for the bike too, so during storage—e.g., over the winter—it protects it from dust. As for the smartphone holder, it’s a standard plastic one, not particularly high-quality. Still, free gifts are always a nice surprise.

After opening the box, you’ll find a small box on the top with the charger, the tools needed for assembly, paper documentation, pedals, a rear reflector, and a front LED light. After removing the amount of foam padding, you get to the bike itself, which is assembled with the handlebars, pedals, and no seat installed (removed).

Simple and fast setup—even without a manual

Right at the start, we have to point out that assembly is very simple and fast. The manual doesn’t include any illustrated step-by-step instructions, but the whole process is intuitive and you can handle it even without a manual.

The most time in the entire process was spent removing all the protective parts and strips that protect almost every single component on the bike. The first steps were attaching the handlebars.

To do that, just insert the handlebar stem into its place—arrows shown at the connection between the parts help with that. Once it’s inserted correctly, fold the handlebars down using the lever, then secure them with the screw that becomes accessible after folding the handlebars.

Next came attaching the seat, which needs no special explanation. The pedals are also simply screwed in and tightened with the included key. The last step was installing the rear reflector and the front LED light.

The front light gave us the most trouble, because the screw nut is quite hard to access with the Allen key included in the package. Interestingly, the front LED light is battery-powered, so it isn’t powered from the bike’s battery. It’s a rather unusual solution for an electric bike.

Build quality and design

Quality is often a big question with Chinese bikes and it’s not always the best. However, the PVY Z20 Pro impresses right away with very good workmanship and a nice paint job. The frame is aluminum, and as many as four layers were used for the paint—very decent.

The whole bike is rather bulky, which is reflected in the weight as well. It’s about 25 kg, which is by no means low. The bike is quite heavy to carry, whether you fold it or not. The design is reminiscent, for example, of the competing Fiido D4S.

So the design isn’t exactly new, but from our side it’s a successful piece. We like the wheels, the entire frame, and even the simple yet modern display on the handlebars. Overall, we have to admit that we really like the bike’s appearance.

Customization options and folding

The PVY Z20 Pro has height-adjustable handlebars and a seat, making it suitable for riders roughly between 150 cm and 190 cm tall. Our editor—who tested the bike—has a height of 185 cm, and these adjustment options were completely enough for them. The handlebars can be set to a height of 108 to 125 cm from the ground, and the seat can be adjusted within 76 – 110 cm.

The manufacturer’s maximum rider weight is 120 kg, so the bike is suitable for most builds. We also appreciate the sturdy kickstand that keeps the bike very stable.

When it comes to folding, it’s nothing new here either. You get the bike in folded form by folding the handlebars down using a lever, and folding the whole bike in the middle frame in half. For unlocking, there’s a small latch and another lever. In this state, the bike measures 645 x 890 x 380 cm, and you can take it in your car trunk without any problem, even though it will take up quite a bit of space.

Not very high-quality suspension and brakes

Unfortunately, as with other electric bikes in this price range, nothing here is perfect. The worst part is the front suspension fork, which is spring-based and doesn’t have the best stiffness. When riding faster over bumps, it often hits its limit, and you can hear a banging sound from it. So we don’t really recommend taking this bike off-road.

As for the brakes, these are mechanical disc brakes—not hydraulic. The rotor size is 160 mm, and while the levers feel nice to squeeze, the braking power is weaker. This e-bike definitely deserves better brakes.

The problem is that, similar to electric scooters, the brakes don’t have a pair of brake pads. Each one has only a single brake pad that pushes on the disc from one side. Plus, the disc isn’t perfectly straight, so it rubs in certain places. The brakes even squeal.

Performance and control

The PVY Z20 Pro is equipped with an electric brushless motor mounted in the rear wheel hub. Its rated power is 250 W, maximum 500 W. The top speed is 25 km/h, but there’s also an option to unlock for a higher speed of 32 km/h. We’ll explain later how to unlock your speed.

On the handlebars, you’ll find a fairly simple yet elegant display showing your current speed, riding mode, battery capacity, and the distance covered since the last power-on. There are four modes – one without motor assist and three with support from the electric motor at speeds of 15 / 20 / 25 km/h.

All these modes are so-called assist modes, which means the electric motor activates only when we’re pedaling (even slowly). Adding throttle via the twist lever works only up to 6 km/h.

How to unlock the speed to 32 km/h and what changes with it? It’s simple and very similar to other bikes or e-scooters from China. Just hold both buttons on the display at the same time for a few seconds to enter a special menu. Here you’ll find the options P1 and P2. The first option, P1, is used to switch units between km/h and mph. P2 is for switching the maximum speed from 25 to 32 km/h.

What else changes after unlocking? The maximum speed of all modes increases to 18 / 25 and 32 km/h, and most importantly, in all three modes the bike can run exclusively on electric power using the lever, without pedaling. What’s strange is that in this way we reach the maximum speed of 32 km/h in any of the three riding modes.

How is it when riding uphill? It’s not exactly great, but on the other hand it’s not that bad either. It handles smaller hills fine, and on steep climbs it slows down noticeably, but still helps with the climb enough that you don’t have to struggle too much.

Battery & runtime

In the mid-frame area, you’ll find a 36V 10.4 Ah battery that is removable. For this purpose, there’s a key included with the bike. So you don’t have to worry that someone could steal the battery from the bike in public.

The battery sits securely in place, and we especially appreciate the cover with a rubber lining located on the other part of the folding frame, which protects the battery from water intrusion.

The manufacturer states a maximum range of 50 – 80 km. 50 km with pure electric drive and 80 km with pedal assist. We tested the bike during winter at temperatures close to freezing, so we didn’t fully verify the overall range in one ride. Considering the bike and rider weight and the weather conditions, we’d expect to cover about 20 km on a single charge in the electric mode without any pedal assist. With occasional pedaling, of course, the range increases.

You can charge the battery inside the bike using the included charger, or also after removing it from the frame. The cover that protects the connector is quite large and made entirely of rubber. It’s located at the top of the middle crossbar. Besides the charging port, there’s also a button for turning the battery on or off, plus a USB port that lets the battery work like a power bank.

Comfort while riding and other components

As we already mentioned in the previous chapters, the bike has front suspension, but comfort during the ride is also boosted by a comfortable seat with slight cushioning and 20″ pneumatic tires. They are truly good, durable, and comfortable.

We haven’t mentioned the shifting yet. In the back, you’ll find a Shimano 6-speed derailleur, and in the front, there’s a chainring with 48 teeth. Everything works properly here, but when you ride fast, we can’t really help the bike anymore since the heavier gears are missing.

Overall, the ride is comfortable and problem-free, but as we already mentioned earlier, the impression is spoiled by the front fork, which rattles. We also appreciate the painted fenders and the rear rack, which can be used not only for a child seat but also for smaller shopping.

PVY Z20 Pro: Final verdict

The folding city bike Z20 Pro is a new release from PVY. It’s based on the well-known design similar to the e-bikes from Fiido and features a 250 W motor with a maximum output of 500 W. You’ll like the solid folding build, good battery protection, and quality paintwork.

You can easily fold the bike with the handlebars folded down, but its overall weight isn’t low at all—it’s around 28 kg. We also appreciate the height-adjustable handlebars, the seat, and the clear display. You’ll also like the option to increase speed up to 32 km/h.

The drawbacks are probably only the weaker brakes and the less high-quality front fork. It does its job, but you can easily reach its limits, where it starts rattling unpleasantly.
