On 17 June in the early hours, the US Qualcomm took the stage to present its new chipset for mid-range devices. We’re talking about the new mobile processor Snapdragon 690.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 will surprise many with its support for the most modern 5G networks. At the same time, it will also please in the mid-range with support for recording 4K video, along with the maximum possible camera resolution of 192 MPx.
Snapdragon 690 will find its place in budget-friendly models
The new model could be the next “happy medium” for upcoming releases with a great price-to-specs ratio. Most likely, it will be featured in the next cheaper models from Xiaomi.
The new processor features eight Kryo 560 cores, with two of them being Cortex A77 types running at a maximum frequency of 2.0 GHz. The other six, Cortex A55, are clocked at 1.7 GHz.
The manufacturing process tops out at an excellent 8 nm. This also allows using operating memory up to 8 GB. The supported RAM type is LDDR4x with a maximum speed of 1,866 MHz.
5G support even in more affordable devices
The main change compared to previous generations of the Snapdragon 6xx series is the integration of the Snapdragon X51 modem, which enables 5G connectivity. Thanks to it, it’s possible to achieve download speeds of up to 2.5 Gb/s, while upload can reach up to 660 Mb/s.
Connectivity also includes support for modern WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. The chip also comes with two 14-bit image processing processors for a maximum resolution of 192 MPx.
It’s the chipset that determines the maximum resolution at which the phone can take photos. That’s why, for example, the Redmi Note 7 uses a 48 MPx sensor, but the resulting photos will always be 12 MPx. The final image, however, will be better thanks to combining four pixels into one.
Other features of the new chipset include support for recording 4K video with HDR colors, as well as displays with maximum resolution of Full HD+ and a 120 Hz refresh rate, plus HDR10 and HDR10+ support.
The newly introduced chipset likely has a great future ahead of it. Its predecessors’ strong sales also suggest that. As we already mentioned, you’ll find it mainly in mid-range smartphones, which should be popular on the market in the future thanks to their friendly price.
