Huawei has unveiled the world’s first foldable smartphone that folds into three layers. Its internal display therefore has two flexible hinges. The technology behind it is truly impressive. But what’s perhaps most worth noting is the thickness comparison of Huawei Mate XT with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6, the classic foldable smartphone. They’re almost identical in thickness.
The Huawei Mate XT has a similar thickness to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6
On Reddit you can find an interesting photo showing just how thin the new Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is in its folded state, or rather how thick the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 build is. Specifically, Mate XT measures 12.8 mm in thickness, while Z Fold6 is just a tenth of a millimeter less—namely 12.1 mm.
On the face of it, this really is a negligible difference. You also need to consider that the Huawei model can be assembled into up to three layers, not just two. It has a 10.2-inch internal display, which is substantially larger than Samsung’s 7.6-inch screen.
The Samsung model is definitely built robustly and with durability in mind. Compared to Chinese models, including the Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 that we’re currently reviewing, it doesn’t feel as futuristic and premium as it did a few years ago, when there were hardly any foldable smartphones on the market. Every year we see incremental improvements, but what Huawei has shown this time is a major step forward—technologically and in terms of design.
