In the field of mobile processors, there’s been a long-standing competitive battle between multiple manufacturers, with the biggest players being American Apple, Qualcomm, and the company TSMC, known more in connection with MediaTek processors.
In general, when it comes to Android smartphones, there’s a common belief that chipsets from Qualcomm are simply more premium and better quality—and to some extent, that’s true too. MediaTek processors were pushed to the sidelines mainly because of their weaker software support and optimization across smartphone manufacturers.
Problems with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
Along with the refresh of Xiaomi 12 series smartphones, the expected premium chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also made its debut on the global market. It’s a flagship processor with 5G network support built on a modern 4-nanometer architecture.

But as time has shown, this new chipset suffers from several issues, with fairly significant overheating among the most serious—going hand in hand with a reduction in peak performance. These shortcomings are therefore a good opportunity for MediaTek processors to break through.
The tables have turned
Not long ago, the well-known leaker Ice Universe shared an interesting post on Twitter, comparing the latest processors from various manufacturers. With a fairly unexpected and interesting result, the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 chipset came out on top.
This chipset, in particular, beat the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor in Geekbench multi-core benchmark performance. The result is even more impressive considering that model 8100 is a 5-nanometer chip meant for the upper mid-range, yet it still significantly outperformed the mentioned 8 Gen 1.
Flagship chipset MediaTek Dimensity 9000 then outperformed the Qualcomm competitor in a multi-core test by almost 1500 points, which is a really huge difference. So it seems that MediaTek is looking at better times, and we, of course, are rooting for the manufacturer.
