MediaTek introduced a brand-new processor, MediaTek Dimensity 720, with support for 5G technologies for the mid-range. Now it has also announced the first smartphone manufacturers that will use it in their devices.

The first trio consists of Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi. Of course, these are brands where we’ve already seen MediaTek processors, so there’s nothing surprising here.
A new MediaTek release
The new MediaTek Dimensity 720 processor was presented just yesterday (23.7.2020), but no information was given about which manufacturer would use it. Now we know—let’s take a closer look at the mentioned chip first.
From the Chinese giants Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi, we can expect affordable mid-range devices. With the new MediaTek processor, they’ll be competing with the US-based Qualcomm. However, the use of different components is limited, and they must be compatible with the processor.
It’s already produced by Taiwan’s TSMC using advanced 7 nm technology, so it ranks among the better options the market has to offer. It includes an integrated 5G modem supporting 2CC aggregation, VoNR, 5G/4G Dual SIM, and also sub-6GHz 5G.
ARM Cortex cores and processor compatibility
It has two ARM Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2 GHz, with which the manufacturer promises a better and smoother user experience. There’s also a graphics chip ARM Mali G57 that supports up to 12 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and fast UFS 2.2 storage.
MediaTek Dimensity 720 SoC also supports a 90 Hz display refresh rate, with extensions like MiraVision or HDR10+. Devices with this chip may also feature one 64 MP sensor, or a dual-sensor setup split into 20 MP and 16 MP.
Since the new telecommunications technology requires a lot of power, it also includes the MediaTek 5G UltraSave function, which saves battery and optimizes performance. The modem will work much more intelligently depending on usage.
Worth mentioning is also the Voice Wakeup feature, which optimizes the use of always-on voice assistants.
