Samsung has been the global leader in smartphone production for many years. However, that has recently changed. At least for the second quarter of 2020, when Huawei overtook Samsung, becoming the global leader in smartphone production.
The king is dead, long live the king
This information is certainly very pleasing for Huawei, but it’s also hard to deny that despite their short time on the market compared to their competitors, it’s an impressive performance.
Despite the ban on trading with American companies due to restrictions imposed by the U.S. government, they managed to ship the most units of their smartphones worldwide. Unfortunately, these disputes are still not over, and the company’s future is partly at risk.

According to information, between the months of April and June of this year, an incredible 55.8 million smartphones were shipped. On the other hand, Samsung doesn’t have to be ashamed of its numbers either. The company shipped as many as 53.7 million smartphones.
Here you can see how much buying power Huawei has in its home Chinese market.
Huawei and Honor dominate the Chinese market
As many as 2/3 of all smartphones from Huawei were sold right in their home China. Huawei, together with its subsidiary Honor, practically controls the Chinese smartphone market. Along with Honor, they cover almost half of all smartphone sales in the domestic market.
The company controls around 46% of the Chinese market, which is still more than companies Vivo, OPPO, or Xiaomi combined. This is the highest market share in smartphone sales history in China.

International sales of Huawei are still decent, but their share dropped in the second quarter of the previous year by 5%. Samsung, on the other hand, records as much as a 30% drop in sales in the same sales period.
This is also due to low interest in some global markets, such as the United States, Europe, or Brazil.
Revenue growth despite obstacles
Recently, however, the Huawei company revealed that their revenue for the first half of 2020 increased by 13.1 % compared to the same period last year. Sales growth was recorded even despite the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and U.S. restrictions.

We’ll see whether Huawei can maintain its leadership position for longer, or whether Samsung will knock it off—something that’s not far off at all. Soon, Samsung will be unveiling its new flagship models for this year, including mid-range smartphones.
