Even the latest Android smartphones can start to slow down over time due to data build-up and limited memory. While a factory reset is a common fix, there’s a gentler approach that involves turning off system animations. This can significantly improve performance by freeing up RAM resources.

Turning off animations can significantly speed up your older Android smartphone
Animations in the operating system make the user experience feel smoother. They provide visual cues for actions like opening apps or switching screens. But on devices with limited performance, these animations can cause lag, stuttering, and choppy visuals. When a user opens an app, changes screens, or performs another action on their device, animations become an important part of a smooth and visually pleasant experience.

For modern, high-performance smartphones with plenty of RAM and fast processors, these animations are designed to be smooth and don’t put noticeable strain on the system. However, on older and less powerful devices, these animations can be more of a hindrance—causing slowdowns and choppy visuals. Each animation uses part of the system resources that could otherwise be used to process other tasks faster. That’s why turning off animations is a simple but effective way to deal with these issues.
How to turn off animations on your Android smartphone?
Access Developer Options:
First, open the Settings app on your device. Find About phone (or Device information), then tap on the Version field. Next, click the version number seven times to unlock Developer Options (you may need to enter your PIN).
Turning off animations:
Go to System update in the menu, open Developer options. Find the Drawing section, and set Window animation scale, Transition animation scale, and Animator duration scale to Off or to a lower value (e.g. 0,5x).
Turning off animations can make transitions feel sudden, but the performance boost is often worth the trade-off—especially on older devices. Consider the age of your phone: the older the smartphone, the more turning off animations can help.
More tips to keep performance up
Besides turning off animations, there are several other ways you can improve your Android device’s performance. Regular clearing app cache is one of them, because it helps free up memory and speeds up your device. If you have a smartphone with an older version of Android, just go to settings and, under Storage, find the Internal storage menu. There you can clear the cache of all apps at once.
On newer versions of Android, this option isn’t available anymore, but you can still clear the cache for specific apps individually in the Apps section. Do this for the apps you use most. In Settings, go to Apps, choose the app whose cache you want to clear.
It’s also important to uninstall apps you no longer use to prevent them from wasting system resources. Regularly updating your device software is also essential to improve performance and ensure you have the latest security patches. We also recommend using built-in memory management tools, such as the Google Files app, which helps remove unnecessary files and optimize your device storage.
Final recommendations
For older devices, it can help to use a lighter version of the home screen (launcher) that’s less demanding on resources and provides smoother performance. In this case, we recommend Nova Launcher, Smart Launcher, or AIO Launcher. If none of these strategies work, you may need to reset to factory settings. This step should be your last resort, because it will wipe all your data and return the device to its original state. Don’t forget to back up all your important data before you do this.
